High Performance, HQ Compound Tires?

Hey guys,


I will be going with 275/60 BFGoodrich tires with cop rims on Madeline for show, photos and daily driver situations. With the XVL2 rear suspension it has given me the full 14" section to work with and will easily double traction and handling over the stock set up. As you guys know, tire size is only 1/3 the issue of getting power to the ground.

I'm looking at a set of rear tires to put on when I want to dive deeper into the Hemis "goodies". Max size I can fit would be a 12.5" tire to be safe. No leaf springs to worry about either. That gives me a good 3/4 of an inch clearance either side. I would go to a 40 profile but no less than that as traction becomes violated lol.

I would run 15 to 18" wheels for better handling. My question, what brands have you used or know of that offer the best compound material? Some tire shops aren't much help so I thought I'd ask here and get some input. I was told and agree that a 275 with HQ compound with track and grip better than a 325 with 3rd world material. I would like something with a good speed rating, over 112mph is a minimum. Ideally, I'd like a 275/60R15 rated for higher speeds with RWL but you can't have everything. If you have any ideas or what not please let me know.

MT ET Street Radial as the best all around street tire........ or my max meat tire for getting power to the ground.......... he he.......

That did cross my mind as I know people run them with no fitment issues and good traction but I want something that can handle all weather conditions (bar snow etc) as if I go away for a cruise the chances of encountering rain are 50/50. I should have mentioned that, my bad.

Ah, I'm guessing the I is for the Indy Profile tires? If so they're Bias-Ply which I won't drive on.
Thus far the Sportsman S/R from Mickey look good, 210kph limit isn't too bad, live-able and radial construction.

Anyone else have any input.

For the plus size wheels I have had great experience with the BF Goodrich G Force KDW. It is standard on the Dodge SRT-4 neon and probably the best tire I have used for plus size wheels. By plus size I mean anything larger than 15" diameter. Plus I believe they are rated for 180 mph.

take a look @ tirerack.com punch in your tire size and see what they have. For a 275 15 with a tall profile I think you may be limited on options. tire rack has thousands of  user reviews which are helpful. A 275 17 or 18 would give you more options.

Thanks guys. 72Hemi, I have been eyeing up those BFGoodrich KDW tires, they do look good but the 17" rims are only 26" OD, too small for my tastes. 18 is slightly better at 27". The speed rating on them is perfect W (168mph) & Y (186) so more than ample for what I am wanting. Definitely in the "possible" pile.

thats gonna be a tough one there......... no tire mfg has ever been able to make a tire to do all that..... just gonna have to pick a tire thats is what you want to do with the car more...... driving purposes i mean....

just my opinion but those radial type tires you wont be happy with as I got rid of mine real quik.... as soon as you drive your hemicuda and hit the gas and the a$$ end blows out on you so easy you get nervous in a hurry 

remembering from the past how you like filsmaguron setup im saying the 325/50/15 et street radial..........racers have been in the 140's +  with these in the 1/4 and beside its not like youll be cruising at 150mph for long periods of time...   

et street radials 13.1 sec. width and 11.6 patch  big fatties in the back ........... 

thats what ill be doing as soon as I fry the et streets off......

Not sure what you mean saying no manufacture out there has been able to make a tire do all that when there are fantastic tires available. To those who track race professionally with all the tire testing gadgets need the best of all worlds I can their point but they'd be extremely picky. For normal driving purposes and drivers off-track, traction and handling are easily obtainable. My problem is finding one with RWL, good OD and in a "non bling" size rim. Sustained high speeds aren't what I'm aiming for, my point is, if I want to, I know I'll be able to do so. Safely.

I think I may have found what I am looking for though, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS Tires. 295/45-18, OD=28.46 to match my BFGs 28. Rated to over 149mph with a good 10/32 tread depth for longevity. Looks perfect but I'll wait for anyone else to pitch in and give their opinions and input. I'd just have to find an all black 18" rim, perhaps a custom set of cop rims. Yup but I'm fine with getting sideways and know my limits and know my cars limits, doesn't bother me.

The Goodyear F1 295/45/18 was the OEM tire on the Ford Lightning trucks.  So if you poked around one of the Lightning web boards, you could probably hear about everyone's opinion on that tire.  A lot of Lightning's are making big power, plus with a truck traction is much harder to get than a car.

This may sound kinda silly, but maybe you could paint/color the lettering on the tire once you find the tires you like. I haven't seen any serious "performance" tire with RWL.

My only concern with the F1GS would be availability (in the future) since only goodyear makes this size, eventually they will stop production and you may be left without a tire, might be good insurance to buy 2 sets. (I had this problem with the rear tires on my Cuda - I bought a tire originally for the Syclone/Typhoon and Mclaren F1, but when those cars went out of production, they stopped making that size tire).

Thanks guys, I will find a nice 275 compound tyre and run with that. Traction should be decent to fine.
Suspension set up will be the key and with XVs 3 link, no springs and good weight distribution it's looking good.
