Brief update.  I wasted most of the past two weekends lazing around when I could have been working, but sometimes you just have to take a break.  :faint:  I'm on vacation this week and started building the shortblock yesterday.  Knucklehead me started by putting the crank in yesterday  :dupe:, then I installed the cam today, only to find that the bearings didn't have quiiittte enough clearance and the cam wouldn't spin freely.  So, out came the crank and into the back of the truck went the block and back to the machine shop it went to have the camshaft journals polished enough to allow the cam to spin.  I'll pick it up Thursday (we're going to Disneyland tomorrow   :jumping:) and I'll restart the short block build.  I hope to at least get the crank and cam back in.  After that, it'll be a week until I get back to it because we're going to Las Vegas for the weekend.  :bigsmile:

Hey Greg,

Have fun with what ever you have planned for your holiday break. :2thumbs:

Do not think you have to jump in and get the crank and cam in straight away, take your time and check clearances buddy, a free spinning engine is a good engine :jumping:

Thanks, Kenny, we're excited about our trips.  The Vegas trip is a combination family visit (my sister lives in Boulder City, next to Hoover Dam) and a little fun for us hanging on the Strip.  Disneyland is a birthday trip for my son.

I'm trying to be very careful about building this engine, since I only want to do it once.  Unfortunately, without the proper mics, I can't check camshaft clearances without sticking the cam into the engine.  I was very careful to check clearances on the mains and the ring gaps already a couple of weeks ago and the machine shop checked clearances on the rods for me.  I'm in no hurry.  :thumbsup:

It's been awhile since I posted on my own thread.  I finally got/made some time to work on the engine this weekend and had hoped to have the short block together by tonight.  No such luck.  I got the timing gear on and the rings on the pistons yesterday and then started installing the pistons today.  KB warns in their literature that the pistons may or may not fit - that the step on the piston (KB278) might contact the head.  Well, after struggling to get #1 in, I test fit the head at TDC and everything seemed OK, though I didn't check piston-head clearance.  Went on to #2 and I had interference.  :swear:  :pullinghair:  So, back to the machine shop goes the whole shebang to have the pistons cut.  :faint:  All this and a constant litany of  >:(  :nono:  >:( from my wife.  I guess I'm learning the value of mocking everything up ahead of time.

Sorry to hear about the interference.   :(  What a bummer. 

At least you had time to work on the engine today.  I had planned to just change the oil in my Challenger today but after I was done working on the other 2 cars it was too dark and cold to work on it.

I think that oil is going on 3 years....  :bricks1:

oh the joys of a custom motor and the wife they just dont understand the fun  :rofl:

Sorry to hear about the challenges, will they have to reballance it all?

As you all might guess from my most recent post a few weeks ago, I've been pretty discouraged by the discovery that my engine was going to have to go back to the machine shop again.  I keep thinking about selling it and buying a nice little 318 Dart.  Last week I spent some time cleaning and organizing my work bench so that I could get to work on some other things.  That's helped my mood a little, so for now, I'll keep going.   :horse:

I got to thinking that maybe I'd done something wrong, like maybe not seating the rod fully against the crank or maybe the shop had installed the pistons incorrectly, so today I double-checked my work and everything was correct.  The photo below shows the right side head installed with #2 at TDC.  You can see that the space between the head and the deck and the little silver bit shining in between the two is the top of the quench dome on the piston.  So, it all goes back.  Since they'll have to mock everything up to check clearances anyway, I'm going to check to see how much extra it'll cost to have the shop assemble the short block.  :walkaway:

Afterwards, I spent a little more time cleaning and organizing, then figured I may as well get to work on another restoration project, so I pulled the wiper motor out and got to work on that.  You can see that some previous owner did a real jury rig job on the wiring - note the twisted pairs in the harness that don't even use butt connectors.  I just got started today - there will be more work next week.  I'm hoping it's salvageable - there's a fair amount of corrosion in the motor casing.

What's happening with the wiper motor?  Was it not working or no park?  :clueless:

Hey Greg,  What are the chances of you taking a picture of the piston at the top of the cylinder with no head and posting it here please buddy.   I am interested in seeing what the top of your pistons do look like old mate. :2thumbs:

Phil, to be honest, I have no idea if it works or not because my car wasn't running when I bought it 15 years ago.  But there's enough dirt and corrosion that I felt opening it up would be a good idea.  I may take it to an electric motor service to have it rebuilt or buy a new one - I don't know yet.

Kenny, will do, but it'll be next weekend before I can get to it.
