I picked up some more stripper today, then went to work to run a few things through the parts washer: stock oil pan, windage tray, bellhousing inspection cover and the chrome valve covers.  The oil pan was thick with sludge on the inside and greasy like the inspection cover on the outside.  I didn't think to take a before picture.  Does the baffle look like it's a homemade add-on?  I was going to clean the timing cover, but when I saw the punch damage at the seal, I didn't waste any time on it.  Besides, it's a good excuse to get a chrome one!

Then back home to continue work on the engine bay.  I didn't take any photos, because even though I spent about 2 1/2 hours in there, it doesn't look a whole lot different on first glance.  When I get in there with the stripping disc, wire wheel and sandpaper, it'll look a lot better.

Get-er-done ...... Any chance you have an air compressor?...Little media blast action will go a long way on your clean up..esp. the rusty areas.

Wade - I do have an air compressor, but it's too small to run a blaster.  And my wife would have a cow about media flying all over the place.  Thanks for the thought.  Oh, and the conditions of the build have changed - check page 1.

Wally - thanks for the tip.  I had intended to move the lines yesterday, but got into it too soon.  And the metering block had to go anyway - with the new front brakes comes a new valve body.

.  And my wife and I reached a more equitable agreement - no time limit, so long as I make a continuing effort.

Well does that mean I don't get to kick your rass when I see you slaking?  :dunno:.................... :poopoke:

Hey Greg - Here's a little inspiration from my 72 RR clone thread.

Less than 6 months and not too much more than you budget (dollar wise although as a percentage it's a bit more)

The main thing is stick to it and even if you grab just 30 minutes, it'll pay off in progress being made.  Believe me, until this weekend I felt like I was in slow motion but now I feel like I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Keep up the good work!

Nice RR, Gary!  I like the interior shot with the sun shine coming though!

I had a very productive weekend.  Yesterday was the 50% off sale at Ecology Auto Parts salvage yard (see here for more info: http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=44148.msg448893#msg448893) and I got a couple of 15" steelies and two seats out of a '91 Probe for under $40.00 total.

Today was Finish the Engine Bay Day.  What the chemical stripper wouldn't take off, I attacked with a wire wheel on my grinder, followed by the mopping disc (sandpaper) to get at the surface rust.  Off course, I couldn't get at everything with the grinder, but my priority was to do a quick job to make the engine bay more presentable while sticking to my goal to get the car rolling as soon as possible.  I didn't intend to restore it to show quality.  Anyway, after lunch, I got back to work, wiping down with a cleaner cloth, followed by a tack cloth, then laying on three coats of self-etching primer, followed by two coats of spray-bomb engine paint.

The last two photos show the rust at the bottom of the wiper motor bucket on the cowl and some gouges in the inner fender from the mopping disc after paint.  Anyone new to paint and bodywork beware - there is no substitute for good prep.  Ideally, I'd have media-blasted everything, cut out the rust on the cowl and laid in some new metal and smoothed and filled the rough spots - but it would have taken five times as long, plus I don't have the necessary metal-working skills - yet.  For my purposes - get on the road quickly - this was an easy detour.  If you can afford to do so, take the time or spend the money and do it right.  :2thumbs:

Nice progress, Greg!  The engine bay looks good painted and I think you could eventually do repairs with the engine still in there.

Thanks, guys.  That rust bugs the heck out of me, but I figured as you do - I'll be able to go back after it later, probably with the engine still in there, just minus the carb and (maybe) the intake.  I wanted to do it now, but couldn't see spending the necessary time to learn to do it right and I don't know anyone with the necessary skills.
