Greg's Hemi Orange Adventure
« on: April 05, 2008 - 03:13:49 AM »
For those who didn't see my restoration thread before the Great April Fools Day Server Massacre of 2008, here's the story of my car.  It's an EV2 Hemi Orange '70 Challenger R/T, JS23N0E101xxx that I bought in September, 1993 for $700.  It came from the factory as a 383/auto, but by the time I bought it, the 383 had been replaced with a 440 and the auto was replaced by a four-speed that was installed by cutting holes in the floor for the linkage - and leaving them open.  :clueless:  No build sheet and no fender tags, but the car appears to have been fairly well-optioned, with Rallye gauges, light package and a luggage rack.  Even though it's lived most of it's life outdoors, this is a SoCal car, so rot is mimimal.  There's some on the cowl at the base of the windshield, the wiper linkage bucket on the firewall has a few holes at the bottom, around the back window (of course!), on the rocker in front of the right rear wheel, the driver's side cowl and few small holes in the trunk.  Most anything else you might see in a photo is surface rust.

Shortly after I bought it, I acquired a girlfriend/fiance/wife with kids (Instant Family!  Just add diamonds!) and, well, what happened next is a common story.  Before money started running short, I managed to have the 476 Stage IV heads rebuilt, clean the radiator and clean/patch/paint the fuel tank.  Later, I bought the Just Suspension front end rebuild kit and the Master Power Brakes front disc conversion.  I've installed the front end parts along with the new spindles and rotors, but have only now gotten around to installing the new power booster.  I also almost completely stripped the car down to a shell, in the process filling the car with boxes of parts before falling off the restoration wagon again.

Last year, we refinanced the house to do some kitchen and bathroom upgrades and I kept out $5000 for cost overruns or to put into the car.  The 5k made it through the remodeling unscathed, so that's my primary "bank."  Then, in January, my wife and I made a deal that I would get the garage for two months to make "significant progress" or I had to sell it.  The original thread started there, with me on vacation last week to really get back to work on the car.  During that week, I took the block into a local machine shop, pulled the dash out and installed an Ultimate Rides dashpad with the help of my friend Mike, rebuilt the rear brakes and installed the rear shocks, pulled the car out of the garage for a good bath with the help of my brother Steve and started mocking up the new master cylinder/booster.

The day before the server massacre, the machine shop called and told me my block was essentially a big paperweight.   :swear:  My last post was three options - go with a 383 that my shop had plenty of cores, find or buy a new 440 block or sell the car.  Plus, I realized that if I was going to be able to work, go to school and be a husband and father, the two months was unrealistic, so my wife and I needed to renegotiate.  Well, new restoration thread!! :woo:  The machine shop had another good block, already mag-ed, for $150.  And my wife and I reached a more equitable agreement - no time limit, so long as I make a continuing effort.  For the time being, my primary goal is still to get the car moving again, without worrying too much about paint and bodywork, but I'll move a little slower and try to do what restorations I am doing right the first time.

So happy your keeping the car. :woo:

Glad to see you are going to stick with it.  Your wife will understand when the car is finished.  You should still try and keep a good timeline though.  Some short term goals are good for progress.

Springtime comes earlier to San Diego than many parts of the country.  I got a late start because my yard was beginning to look like a jungle.  Since my son and I went to the Goodguys Del Mar Nationals yesterday, today was yard work day and I didn't get to the car until after a late lunch - almost 3:30.

Since we've reached a compromise and I'm going to work on doing things right the first time, where budget allows, I've decided I'm going to paint the engine bay.  By that time, I figured it was a little late to be pulling the car partially out of the garage so I could start stripping the paint, so I worked on one of the smaller restoration projects - the taillights.  I'm going to work on these type of smaller projects whenever I can when time is short.  Good weeknight projects.

I disassembled the right side housing and worked on the bezel, lens and housing.  The bezel is pretty pitted and had had some black paint around the edges, which I took off with a soft wire brush and Scotchbrite pad.  The chrome under the paint was still pretty shiny, so that got me to thinking that the rest of the bezel might shine up pretty good, so I worked at the rest of the surface with Scotchbrite and then some metal polish and it cleaned up pretty well.  It may be pitted, but it'll be the best looking pitted bezel around.  The left side bezel isn't as badly pitted.  I also worked on the lens - they're both still in excellent shape, just a couple small cracks that are inside the plastic - not to the surface inside or out.  You can hardly see them.  I hit the housing with the abrasives, but it's not cleaning up so well, so it's time to get out the power tools and some spray cans.  But, after spending 2.5 hours, it was time for shower, dinner and a little time with my buddies on C-C.com!

DB - I'm pretty happy about keeping the car too!  :smilielol:   The block at the machine shop is a 440.  Gotta call them tomorrow and see what I need to order from Summit.

Tom - I hope she understands - but it's the process (and the attendant noise and mess) that's the problem.  One of the great things about this site is the support system.  I agree, the smaller goals are good for progress - I'm working on breaking it all down into a series of small projects.  I think one of the reasons it's taken me so long is I have a tendency to look at the entire build and get bogged down by the magnitude of the it, instead of seeing it as a series of smaller jobs.  This site, your build especially, is helping me to change my thinking. ;)

Great Job on the tailights.  Those are Big $$ for repros.  If the smell(painting, cleaning) gets to be too much in the house, I duct tape the door shut.LOL

Awesome Greg!!! have you thought about shooting inside the door jams and trunk while you're at it? I dont think that will take too much more paint and materials.  :dunno:

Scott,

They look great!  I'll take 'em!  Do you have the spring kit too?  I'm hoping to order everything except the cam and lifters from Summit in the next day or two - I'll put together a build list and ask for suggestions before I do - and would want to order the springs if you don't have them.  Might as well save on shipping wherever possible.

Does the cat come with in the package? :poopoke: :roflsmiley:

Thanks, buddy.  I LOVE this site!!

Great progress, Greg!  I'm really impressed with the amount of work you're getting done!  Great that the wife is so supportive of you!  Keep pumping away!
