Great that the wife is so supportive of you!  Keep pumping away!

Right.  Supportive.   :swear:

Thanks, Phil, but I'm not getting so much done as you think - not yet anyway.   I'm planning on spending some good quality garage time this weekend, so we'll see. :working:

These old Challenger's and Cuda's can be a adventure for sure. When I brought my Cuda home in boxes in the back of a 26 foot Penski truck my wife said I had lost it and the Cuda would never run again. I was not under any real pressure so it took me 5 years to restore it back to stock. Get the Challenger running and drive and enjoy the car as you work on it if that is possible. Were all here for support so keep on working and post more pictures as you make progress.

I imagine we could swap stories.   :drama:  :violin:

Frankly, to her credit, she was patient for a long time - although there was about a four year period in there where she never saw it.  She's only gotten impatient over about the last two.  And I can't deny, I've thought about selling it a time or three and getting something that ran.  Last fall, I almost pulled the trigger on this Dart convertible.  This site and the people on it are really inspiring me to get moving.  That and the prospect of being forced to sell it :stomp: before I ever get the chance to  :burnout:

:roflsmiley: :smilielol:  Naw, it was when I was storing at a coworkers house.  Next to a field.  Took awhile to clean up the mouse droppings and everything they chewed up to make a nest.

It was.  It is/was owned by a very nice older guy (70?) up in Alpine, about 45 minutes from me, up in the foothills.  My son and I went up to look at it last fall and he pulled up in a matching green one, only completely restored - gorgeous car.  He was a big fan of early A-bodies and said he had a couple of cars and I could buy a 273 built as a race engine if I was interested.  It needed some body work as well as paint, and the engine, a /6, had been recently rebuilt, but needed a new rear main seal.  It ran very well, but the steering was shot - I was see-sawing back and forth a 1/4 turn to keep it on the road.  Beautiful evening, top down, cruising on the freeway, little bit a chill in the air.

I also looked at a '64 Valiant station wagon last summer, owned by a young guy - about 30 - who was going to use the proceeds to put into his '64 Valiant Signet two-door.  I saw the two-door on E-bay about six months later.  The wagon was nice, but except for the fact that it ran, it needed as much work as my Challenger, so I was never seriously tempted.

OK, back to the build.  I spoke to my machinist on Tuesday and he said the block was mostly done, though he still needed to deck it.  He's holding off on doing a final hone on it until I get the pistons to him because he wants to size the individual pistons to each hole.  Now that's good service.  Anyway, the block is .040 over and the crank is .020 under on both the mains and the rods.  So, now it's time for me to design my engine.  After a little research, I see that Summit is pretty competitive in everything and I figure if I can order most of my things from one place, I can save a little on shipping.

Here's my build:

.040 forged TRW pistons and moly rings in the Summit rebuild kit: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=FEM%2DCSMHP815%2D422&autoview=sku.  Frankly, I'd like a little more compression than what the stock kit offers.  I'll probably order by phone and inquire about something with a little dome on them.  Then again, if I ever go to a different head...

ARP bolts in both the bottom end and the heads.

Balancer - I seem to remember Moper saying good things about the Summit damper: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DC4279&N=700+4294840062+4294888798+4294925232+4294839044+4294871851+4294871921+400304+115&autoview=sku , though I thought about the TCI Rattler.  A little too pricey.

Heads, as previously mentioned, are 476 Stage IV.  I don't know what the flow numbers are, but I would expect close to the Stage V head they offer now (anyone got any numbers?)  I also don't know about the valve spring specs, but I've already arranged with Dave, the machinist, to check them when I bring the short block kit to him.  My new best friend Scott, (thedodgeboys), is supplying me with new shafts, rockers and pushrods (find those yet, Scott?) for some as-yet undetermined price.

I'm undecided on a cam, except that I want a hydraulic 3-bolt.  I'd like to see 450-475 hp - enough to get into the 12's and give my friend with the '07 Corvette a run for his money.  I also want to be able to run power brakes (18" of vacuum, according to Master Power Brake) and be able to idle at a stoplight without the car dying.  Lopy idle is fine, but idle.  I was thinking the Comp 268H until I saw it was a one bolt, so that's out.  Maybe the similar Lunati grind or an Engle cam, as suggested by CP.  Or is a 268 too "radical" with iron heads and power brakes?  And that's assuming my springs will handle it.

Intake manifold is the Edelbrock CH4B that came with the car - precursor to the current Performer.  Mopar Muscle did an intake comparison a few years ago and the CH4B did pretty well, only losing a couple of cfm to the Performer on a flow bench.  Besides, I already have it.

Carb - 800 - 850 cfm, electric choke, vacuum secondaries.  I have a rebuilt 625 cfm AFB, if anyone is interested.

Ignition - Mopar Performance electronic - orange box, I think.

Exhaust - For budgetary reasons, I'm going to re-use the headers that were on it.  Rusty, of indeterminate brand, but they'll do the job.  Measurements and pics later.

I know I'm leaving something out, but my eyes are closing down for the night.  I'm open to suggestions.   :feedback:

Thanks everyone.

I will find them Saturday...

I will pm you also so we can settle up.  :2thumbs:

What are you going to run for ignition I also have a new MSD 6al.

Have you looked at ATI dampeners\balancer?
Will you have your motor balanced?

Great start could be almost all your budget just on the motor.  :22yikes:

This weekend's project is to spruce up the engine bay.  I already have some Hemi Orange engine paint, more than I need, so I went by the paint store for other supplies: self-etching primer, a can of aircraft stripper, a couple of stripper discs, some cleaning cloths and tack cloths and a couple of dust masks.

After about fifteen minutes using the stripping discs, I realized that wasn't going to work - my drill was seriously hot and the discs wouldn't fit the angle grinder.  Time for the stripper, which we typically use at work when we're going to re-paint a bus (Shhh - don't tell the EPA). :angelwings:  Man, that stuff works!  Unfortunately, there wasn't quite enough to get it all, so I'm going to get some from work tomorrow AM to finish up before hitting the rust spots with the stripper disc, wire wheel or sandpaper and try and shoot the primer and paint.

The last pic is my newest piece of garage art I bought at the Del Mar Nationals last week.  It's a Hemi car, but it's close enough to serve as inspiration.

Greg, you may wanna yank thos remaining lines and brake block off, that throttle cable should pull through with a little elbow grease once you disconnect it from the pedal. I say this b/c i "worked around" a few things and it was stressful.

Great progress!!!!  :2thumbs:

and nice picture
