A little duct tape should fix it.
« on: April 05, 2008 - 06:55:43 PM »
Had something kind of scary happen today. I was cruising down the highway in my 2000 F150. I lightly applied the breaks to slow down for an upcoming turn, and all hell broke loose. Lots of grinding and squealing sounds coming from the front end. So I immediately slowed down to find a good spot to pull off the road. Just as I was turning into a driveway I felt the right front of the pickup fall down on the ground. I assumed my wheel fell off. When I got out, this is what I found...

From what I can see, the lower caliper bolt fell out. I think when if fell, the wheel flipped it up and wedged it between the caliper and the wheel. The bolt acted as a pizza cutter and cut the wheel in half as it turned. I think the bolt must have initially hit with enough force to put a hole in the wheel and started a crack. I'm just glad the wheel didn't split while I was doing 60mph.

Absolutely no signs or noises until I applied the brakes.

"Quality Is Job One"?

As I see it. It's a 2000 model. I am thinking it was a mechanics negelect error after a (break) job and maybe not the manufacturer. Today, everyone works for money,so it seems. Thier bills are so high they go for the dollar and not the quality, even when lives are at stake. I'm a stickler for grading my work. It has to be right. Cept for cosmetics, everyone who knows me will tell you that. But it will stay together.

Again, glad your ok

:22yikes:  :scared:  Wow!  Glad you're  okay!!!

That looks like it might need 2 rolls of duct tapeactually!  :roflsmiley:

I can relate to this in that when I started out being a mechanic a long time ago, I forgot to tighten up a caliper bolt also and it fell out but it didn't cause the damage like it did in your case.

Glad your okay!
