What color were the rear springs originally?

I have seen restored cars with black ones and natural grey springs too.  Living in Wisconsin means that any unrestored cars I see have a nice rust brown color.  Since I have the new springs laying on the work bench I thought I might as well make them the "correct" color, but I am not sure what that color is on a 70 Cuda.

Wow - I always thought they came in both the semi flat black and bare steel.  Like FJ5_440, I also live in the rust belt, which means most I've seen have that rust layer, so I assumed they were bare steel originally.

CP: Was that semi flat black the only color used in 1970?  (I'm getting ready to paint the new springs for my '70 Challenger, too).

Just took a close look at mine....definitily black...seems to be lower gloss than semigloss....
I've been using a lot of satin black, I like it because the imperfections don't show up so bad but it still looks new.

seeing as they flex constantly I imagine it would not take long for the paint to crack & chip which would start the rust

Could be painted black or bare with a light cosmoline coating.  Semi gloss if you want them to look like they are a couple of years old.

Thanks for the photos.  Since the bare ones will look like poo after a few months. the black looks like my best bet.  It looks like the springs were painted before assembly.  The car is certainly no trailer queen, but I might as well do it right the first time.
