Dave, its interesting your listing on the web site describes them as

70-74 E,71-73 B REAR FRAME RAIL ASSEMBLY,EACH
[2120-770-70R]PRICE:     $399.95

I don't think anyone is going to have any luck putting those rails into a 71-73 B-Body !!

Are Goodmark and AMD competing to get these rails out? For years no one had anything, now 2 company's are going to build them? Yet nobody is doing the front rails?

Just wondering

Dave

yes goodmark and Amd are in competition with each other on all of the parts. Just like year one and Paddock, Goodmark had to start over on alot of there tooling for a few reasons.

I have confirmed and I was mislead to believe that the 71-73 B rear rail were the same. I will correct the listing. thanks for pointing that out.

I have ask why no front rail have been done yet to both goodmark and AMD and it is due to tooling because of the make up of the front rails are much more difficult than the rear.

I thought that must have been a bit of misinformation !!  Glad to help.
I think its silly they are trying to compete on the sheetmetal, Goodmark could have had the market sewn up a few years ago, but they seem to have to much red tape to move quickly enough.
My understanding on the front rails was tooling could be in the $50-75000 range to get it right, even with digitizing. Thats a lot of dough to shell out, for a very difficult part to duplicate.
I think it will happen, maybe later then sooner.

Someone is obviously moving towards reproducing total body shells, so I am betting front frame rails are on the list.

Good luck registering that in California. It has been a nightmare for people trying to register the other new bodies like the Camaro and 57 Chevy.

What kind of problems are they running into? I have been wondering for a while how its being registered? As a KIT car? As a homemade car? Are people switching VIN id? It seems like it could be a big issue.
I hear that A complete shell is right around the corner by the same guys doing the other steel bodies.

I don't have all of the details (but I could probably get them from my Dad as he works for a manufacturer here in California) but from what I understand if you don't want to have to meet all of the current year standards for safety, lights, brakes, emissions, etc you have to apply for a special VIN and they only offer 500 a year in California at the first of the year and they are usually all gone in the first 20 minutes or so that the offices are open. Otherwise you have to fall under the category where you have to meet all current standards. There is also a problem with people doing VIN swaps on cars as well and there are a lot of people getting in trouble for that most recently Unique Performance and also Boyd Coddington.

The VIN swap will be the hot ticket, but not the most legal. Otherwise it will be a kit car. Some states make you meet the emmissions of the year and make of the motor, and other want you to meet the emmissions of the original year of the body you are cloning. Others just make it exempt all together as a kit car. I like them doing it as it makes all the sheetmetal available, but it can hurt the hobby when people start cutting VIN out of cars and welding them into other bodies, original or reproduction.

Where I live, the state police theft and fraud divisions, are all over old classics, looking for signs of VIN alterations. I am hesitant to recommend to anyone about getting a shell like this. I looks good, but are the headaches worth it?

It's killed the aftermarket bike (motorcycle) building business too in california - literally - some weird regulations where frame id's are limited also. The kit car regs seem to change every 5 years here. There is a bill to return pre 76 model year vehicles to the smog program (again!) but only in the central valley that I saw on the news just last week. California is a nutty place.

For bikes in California (unless it has changed) an individual can only build one custom bike from the ground up for their entire life.  :screwy:
