To make it even muckier, I would assume he took the carb off to put the electric choke on. If he now has a vacuum leak, that would explain why it won't stay running while in gear.   :dunno:

  Mike

:iagree:  That happened to me a couple of months ago.  Ran crappy, stalled under 2000rpm.  Had a small vacuum leak due to a cracked hose at the rear base of the carb going to the air filter housing.

Not that this is the issue but something to think about...

I would also suspect that it has nothing to do with the electrical repairs you did. Most likely something else just decided to give up and causes these symptoms. Once, I installed a new (old) carb to our six banger Mustang and after the installation it ran very rough or not at all. Before the change it worked almost flawlesly. Well you can guess how many hours I put on the carb to check and recheck everything on it and later found that the condensator from the points type ignition decided to give up at the same time and caused all the problems.

Keep checking for everything that you haven't touched, which could cause same symptons, and I guess that you will find the problem

Wally,

Do you have electronic ignition?  I swear...if this ends up being a clogged fuel filter...  :horse:   :horse:   :horse:

I have electronic ignition. is it possible that the soldering gun heated up a wire too much and created problems up or downstream????

They definitely recommend that you unplug things before soldering. How close were you working to anything that could have been damaged, like the ballast?
