Gas tank
« on: April 17, 2008 - 11:51:08 AM »
I did not think this was a body question, exactly, but like many of my questions....they are grey areas....

I bought a new gas tank for the 73 Challenger.

I can not do much about the interior of the tank so...on to my question.

the top of my old tank rusted out, partialy I think because of moisture trapped between the tank and the pad on top.

If the top half of the tank is coated with "bed liner" in theory that should not be a concern, and should not even be seen.

any thoughts

I think adding some kind of extra "coating" to prevent rust to the top of the tank is a really, really good idea.  I also think you are dead on with the reason for the rust out on the top of the tank.....    I may follow your lead when I put my new one on as well.    I bought some of the spray on bedliner at advance auto a while back and used it like under coating.   Seemed to work real well and was less than $10 a can.  Might want to look at that for the top of your tank....

Someone else suggested the stray-on version.  could do the whole tank in it (keep it from looking drity/rusted over the years.

Just need to keep the filler and sending unit ports clean.

The original pad on top of the tank was something like tar paper, in that it wouldn't absorb moisture. I wonder if someone put something else above your's?   :dunno:

mine is more of a cushion like you would have to keep heat down or to keep from rubbing through

When I put in my tank, I used a piece of roofing felt that is used under shingles. I think it has some kind of tar coating impregnated into it.

Anything that doesn't absorb moisture and not too thick is a good idea,   :working:  however make sure that the tank has a good ground or your fuel guage may not work.

One thing I am not sure of... The guage.

everything I have will be new going back, but no idea if the guage works

You can ground the wire that plugged onto the tanks sending unit and the guage should go all the way past "FULL".

   :iagree:

Here is a pic of it. Take the blue wire, and gound it to the strap going to the pick-up tube.   When you turn the key to the "on" position, it should peg.
