Axle bearings
« on: April 20, 2008 - 09:30:14 PM »
I'm about to change my rear axles with a used set I bought from a member here.  He said the bearings were good (and they weren't the Green bearings) but he recommended changing them since I have the axles out already.  I bought a set of bearings from the parts store (not Green) and my question is, are they pressed on?  If so, where would I take the axles to have the bearings changed out?  Is this something I can do myself without major tools and whatnot?

you need to cut the retainer ring off to remove the brg , the have the retainer ring back on after the brg is in place

 :iagree:

I use a 2" pipe about 4 ft long to slide down the axle to put the retainer back on. That was in the 1980's   I have a press now :2thumbs:

So it wounds like I will need 2 new retainer clips (1 for each side) if I have to cut the old ones off, correct?

Is this the retainer clip you are referring to?  I'm having issues finding one, if anyone knows where I can get one (or has some), please let me know.

Thanks Mike....I just picked up the brake tool, a brake tubing wrench and some brake fluid (DOT 4).

I didn't by the package at any store, I bough the oil seals (4) and bearings (2) at a Dodge dealership that still sells old parts and the foam gaskets I bought off ebay.  I called autozone, napa, and advance auto parts but no one seems to have that clip..... :clueless:

The bearing retainer still comes with the bearings. You should change the seals too.   Here are my pics:

Do the adjusters and retainers need to be replaced also?

ok, I'm in a bit of a pickle here.....Neither Advance auto, auto zone or carquest have the bearing kit or just the retainer by itself.  I tried looking real quick online (while at work) and the only ebay item I found is for the Green bearings which Rob mentions to keep away from, which I will.  Can anyone think of another place I can find this clip?  This is killing me here....I've got the bearings, race, and 2 oil seals for each axle but now I can't find the one part I really need.... :swear:

In the exploded view the piece you want is called a "collar" measure the axle is the collar could be interchangable with other makes.  My suggestion would be to contact a differential specialist and ask them where to get the collars from. :2thumbs: They may even have these collars in stock.
