Axle bearings

No Comment.  I had a senior moment the other day.  At work, I was giving a younger guy trouble because he forgot the push button code for our locked door about a month ago.  Last week, I did the same thing on a Monday morning.  I stood in front of the door hitting codes that didn't work and could not remember it.  (used the code for 2 years).   Ten minutes later, I knew it without thinking about it.  Go figure...

I also hate when I buy a part for my car and find one that I bought a long time ago.

Yeah Iknow I had that coming.....

Finally got all the correct parts and sent the axles to the shop to have the bearings and everything put on as we speak.  Hopefully when you get here Goody, all we have to do is plop the axles in, adjust the end play and put the brake stuff on and we should be good to go!

Bob, have you found out the method for removing those axle seals that are in the housing?

Can anyone tell the special method/tool for removing the axle seals?

Just reach in there with any kind of hook and pull.   Pops right out.  Then just tap the new one in till it's square in the hole

Is there a lip in the axle tubing so you know how far the new seal goes in?  Almost like a stopper?

 I think the machined area will not let you put it in too far.  Once you pull it, you'll see how easy it is.  I usually jack one side higher than the other to do that side first and make sure diff lube doesn't run out.

I got the Driver's side seal out....but boy what a PITA it was.....as you can see from the picture, I had to pry it out with the back side of a hammer (it's the only "hook" item I had), then when it was loose, I used plumber pliars to pull it out....but it didn't come out without a fight....I even bent the handle of a small hammer I had due to force.   

Here's some pics of the old seal and the new ones.....? for everyone.....as you can see in the pics, I've got 2 different seals.  The Chrysler one came from Orlando Dodge and they said it's supposed to be the right one, while Advance Auto AND Auto Zone show the one on the left (National Brand) to be the one.  Looking at the old one, it appears that the National Brand is the correct one, yeah? neah?

I truely don't think it's the Chrysler seal....but I wanted to get some more opinions....and yes you are correct, the Chrysler seal has a larger diameter than the National seal.

If you had some kind of cheap dent puller, with a home-made hook on the end, you might of had an easier job getting it out.  The seal you have is the same one that I had in my thread. The outside diameter should be the same and tight enough to seal the lube in when installed correctly. Use something of the same diameter to drive it in square. If you want to make it a little easier to slide in, use a very thin coat of RTV on the outside before tapping it in. I also wipe the inside housing surface with gas or brake clean to get it clean. 

Before installing your axle, wipe a little gear-lube or grease on the new lip or axle.

So the National brand is the correct one then?
