Challenger bulge hood question
« on: April 22, 2008 - 12:43:46 AM »
I know that 70 Challenger hoods don't have the crumple zones and the units made after that do, but is there any difference between the 2?

I'm no expert, but I don't believe there are any other differences.

Non crumple hoods were only available on early cars up until mid year 70.  So if you are doing a numbers car it would depend on yor build date to what hood you would need.  But other than what CP said, they are the same hoods. :2thumbs:

72 and newer hoods are different on the front underside where the latch goes.  They are raised to work with the hood latch pull lever.  I don't have a pic right now.  The 71 hood is the same as 70 except it has crumple zones. The Goodmark hood is a 71 hood.

A Mopar guy here just finished taking a Goodmark repop apart to put it's top onto a flat hood's non-crumple bottom. After making a die to restamp all of the cowl holes to proper size, the hood looks like a genuine early '70 hood.  He had many hours in that hood, that the customer will be paying for.  Save your flat hoods if it matters that much.

I can't get to my 70 hood.  It is burried in the garage.  This pic is from a 73.  72-74 hoods are like this on the back.  The latch has a pull rod on it.  This rods mount is screwed in with two phillips screws.  The raised mount for this is not on a 70 or 71 hood.  It is flat in this area instead of raised.

Thanks for the picture. What did the 70-71 have to hold the pull bar with or was there a pull bar?

The 70 hood has a lever that moves sideways, activating the latch release.  Check the photo below.  I can't speak to the '71, but it's probably the same.

That is your primary latch.  The lever I am showing is the secondary latch.  This is a safety in case the hood comes open.  1970 and 1971 use the same secondary latch lever.  They use different primary latches due to the shape of their grilles.  I'll have to get a pic.

These two pics are from cars at a show.  The 70-71 has a lever handle built in.  The 72-74 uses the pull rod.  The latch bolts into the same place.

Thanks. The hood I have is a 72-74 so it will work for now, but I will change it later.
