The 72-74 latch style will fit and clear all years of grilles etc.  The 70-71 latch style may hit the header panel on the 72-74 cars.

:-[  Oh, yeah.  It's been so long since I've actually had to open the hood, I forgot exactly which way it worked. (I was going to say had the hood on the car, but it's been sitting on the roof ever since I took it off the hinges three years ago.

No I'm doing the car in the thread below (pictures on page 2). It's a factory 340 4 speed plum crazy white interior white stripe car.

Yeah it will be a good project, but I am going to cheat and have the frame fixed by a friend of mine who works at a shop with a frame rack. The rest I'll do.

Using the frame rack is a wise idea.

I thought about doing it myself, but I came to my senses and decided this was a job for a rack. That rail is shoved over at least 6 inches, maybe 8 and the k member is buckled (that is being replaced). I need to take a picture of the hood and post it. It looks like the car hit a pole from the passenger side. The hood is caved in all the way to the center of itself.

Are you guys saying that only '72 and later cars had the pull rod?  I used to own a '71 with the pull rod.

To the best of my knowledge yes.  Did your 71 without a doubt have the original hood?  If so maybe they changed it mid year 71.  The 1970 hoods had the crumple zones added to the late 70 models.  It could be the same with the hood latch.

Yes my '71 had the original hood, albeit a shaker hood (it's the car in my avatar).  I was a late build date car so maybe that's why it had '72 components, although the shaker bubble was dated NOV '69!

That would make sence.  Chrysler had fits with the production of the shaker hoods.  Date codes on these parts ended up all over the place.

Maybe the hoods were this way.  Early 70, no crumple zones; Late 70-early 71, crumple zones; late 71-74, hood pull rod style secondary latch. Dodge symbol 70 & 71; letters 72-74.
