The 72-74 latch style will fit and clear all years of grilles etc.  The 70-71 latch style may hit the header panel on the 72-74 cars.

Wow, I'm glad to see this.  Until I read this thread, I had no idea there were differences in the latches.  The previous owner of my '70 cobbled it together with pieces of a bunch of cars, one of which must have been a 72-74, because I have that pull rod.  So I was reading this thread, fearing that it would not clear the '70 grille.  Thanks for the info!

-Tom

The ovals were not cut for the letters.  They were already there and happened to be convenient for the letters. I am not an engineer.  I do know the holes where made for one of two purposes; to lighten the hood or to strengthen it.  I believe in this case it was to stengthen it.

My 1970 Power Bulge hood has the DODGE letters on it.  Sorry for the poor quality - it's upside down on the roof of the car - only place I have to store it.  That's actually the roof at the top of the photo.

In fact, if you look at the red '70 R/T in the C-C logo at the top of this page, you can see that it has the lettering and the hood stripe.

The triangle logo was unique to the '71's wasn't it?
