Dana 60 vs 8 3/4
« on: April 22, 2008 - 06:49:10 PM »
Hello all,

Just a couple of newbi questions.  My car wich is a 70 r/t clone with a 440 six pack came with an 8 3/4 inch rear end.  Everything I have read said the 60's were standard.  Is this true, or were 8 3/4s an option?  what are the pluses and minuses of each rear end.  I know this is kind of an opinion question, but everyone is valued.  Thanks in advance.

I think the automatic models could come with either but the 4 speed only came with the dana. Both are good, if you are doing hardcore drag racing then the dana would be better. All depends on what you want to do with the car
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Dana 60 only. With an auto you had the option, but there was no option with the 4 speed.

Well, that swapout will have to wait until next winter.  I sthere any place besides a junk yard or e-bay to find a Dana 60?  If junkyard is a route, what other vehicles could i get one out of.  What other considerations will I have ie, do I have to replace the drive shaft, brakes, or is this an easy swapout?  I know nothing is easy........

Dana 60's were used in many pickups and should be an easy junkyard find.  Mopar Muscle did an article a few years back that showed how to modify a truck Dana for use in an B- or E-body.  It didn't seem too difficult for someone with decent metalworking skills - cut the ends off, cut the tubes down to the proper size and then weld the ends back on.  Any decent driveline shop should be able to do the work.  You'll have to buy the appropriate axles, but those are easy to find - Randy's Ring and Pinion should have them.

Converting can be done ... BMW!

Bring Money With!!!

True e-bad Dana 60's are $$

Dana made them for all domestic pick-ups(mopar-gm ford-international) at one time or another. And easyer to find, but still $ to set up.

Yeah I know, I started with a budget but gave that up quickly as a pipe dream.  Are the 8 3/4 axles worth money?  Axles at both of those sites dont seem too bad in the grand scheme of things....  I would probably sell what I have to help offset the cost......

I had Dr. Diff put me together a Dana 60 setup with a Eaton Tru-Trac differential and his disc brake kit.  I love it...
If you want it done right, Dr. Diff is one of the good routes to take.

Good question lol. Not 100% sure at the moment but I do keep all invoices for the builds in folders.
From memory it was around $3,100 USD with all the extras I added on and shipping to LA.

Website isn't a big flashy thing but his work is where the money is.

Similar about $3000-3500 for the setup I got but man is it awesome.  Whole different car from the 8 3/4 that was in it.
