Keisler 5 speed conversion for challenger
« on: March 04, 2004 - 02:09:30 PM »
Does anybody have any feedback on the Keisler conversion? I'm thinking about putting it behind a 472 Hemi with the original 4:10 Dana in the rear. I'm just wondering how it would hold up with torque. Its more of a show and go car than race car.... Thanks :)

jumpin jesus

you must be made of money

the 5 speed should handle the hemi no problem but upgrade to the 475 or 650 hp kit

If it's a #'s matching car I would leave it as a 440/727. There aren't too many of them around and it's always a shame to see them get mixed and match, you could buy a e-body non-#'s on eBaY. Then go wild!!!!! and still keep that Challenger clean and "stock".
Just my opinion. you do seem to be OK on the dollars side of things, so thats why I though a "cheap" body to start from scratch, also be a fun project.  ;D

Hey NZ

You and my wife think the same. I've got the 70 F440 HP block and its ready to build but.... I'm not sure with the auto trans... Its a neat car and rare since its an automatic, 440 R/T and was ordered with the 4:10 Dana. On the other hand this car with the Hemi, a 5 speed and a 4:10 Dana would be a blast to drive...

LOL!!  ;D Your wife thinks about the future too.  ;)

That would be a blast to drive, but replacing a 440 that matches the car is not done too often, I'm sure you'd keep the block and trans but have you thought about buying a rolling e-body chasis?  ??? You can do what ever you want, not that you can't now but IMO would be the way to go. You'd have a numbers matching e-body, 2 Corvettes and a street/strip 472 Hemi/5-speed. What are you wanting the car to do? All out bracket car or a quick and fun to drive car? Don't under estimate the Auto's, won't be as fun to drive but pull hard 1/4 mile times. On the other hand so would your 5-speed but wouldn't be as consistent and probably not as quick depending on how far you take the 472.  ;D

Just my opinion but I don't really like seeing cars mixed/matched when there just to rare.  :-\

Cheers,
Carl

67vette427, I have the keisler TKOII on my Cuda 340 and love it!
I was forunate enough to purchase the "revised" versions and did not have issues with fit.
Mine was literally a bolt-in deal.
I have a 3.91 rear in my car and with the steeper 1st gear you really feel it, not bad in my opinion.
Smallblocks are screamers so when I launch her she MOVES :)
Nothing is weirder than getting use to the fifther gear. You get on teh highway, car is starting to rev high then you just put her in fifth and she hums along down the highway :) Not to mention the top end runs ;)
Would I do it over again? Hell Yeah! I wouod get the new optional Hurst shifter before you bolt-it in to tighten the shifter even more. The stock keisler shifter feels very similar to the stock 4spd shifter.
Good luck!
As for switching to a 5spd..... I am fortunate enough to have purchased a 'vert cuda which Is an auto. which will be nice for the days I want automatic and drop the roof :)

I have heard of problems fitting the Keisler  & I still wonder about the strength of it , the other option is the proven 833 OD which is a bolt in swap & will definatly take the power

Hey Guys!

Lots of good feedback. I'll keep the 440 and auto and I may even still stay with the auto but the car will always be able to go back to stock. The one thing I really like about the 67 is that its # 427 is on a stand and I don't worry when I drive it. This will be the same and can always go back. I thought about going with a fixer upper but there is just too much to do as most of those weren't very well cared for and there are alot of heavy duty parts already on the 440 car.

Like Chryco says, I'm a little concerned with the torque pressures on the Keisler box.

I remember driving these 4:10 cars back in the early 70's and the high RPM's really wore the motors out early so this 5 speed or even the 833/OD is a dream.

How available is the 833 OD. I haven't heard where to locate those.

The 833 Od is a bolt in , it is the same 833 used for regular 4 spds & no Granny gear although the shift spacing is wider  , We installed one in Brians [Cuda] & he loves it

I think I'll check into that Chryco. Do you know where to find one or should I check some wrecking yards? What about the linkage for the pistol grip? Basically just check for a 79-92 4 spd p/u?

Thanks

pick up or van
the linkage for the E body works with the pistol grip , the van/ truck linkage is too short
