904 & 727
« on: March 04, 2004 - 02:41:48 PM »

CP... or anyone else that might know... I was talking with my trans instructor today about old Chrysler transmissions... he says that the 904 only came in a 3 speeds (I partly agree with that, but thought they also came with 4 speeds)... then he also said that the 727 was just a stronger version of the 904 (which is true), but he said that the 727 was also only a 3 speed (which I don't agree with)...???  ??? ???

He said Chrysler didn't come out with 4 speed transmissions until the mid-80's and it was a 604 or a 606 trans.... ::) ???

I'm really confused here and need some help clearing this up!!

Thanks guys!!

My 727 is a 3-speed, most of them are unles they get a O/D installed. 904 4-speed, I myself have not heard of a stock 904 with this option. A518 etc would have them but not the early  70's and prior models. You thinking of changing to a 727?  :D

H eis correct , the 727 & 904 were only 3 spds
the newer 518 & Cummins autos are supposed to be based on the 727 but are not designated as 727 trannies

the 518s aren't anywhere near as strong as the good ol 727s.......but they work most of the time..... ;D enless you get the 518 built it won't stand up to the power the 727s did..

IMO TCI is the best, but B&M shift kits aren't bad. They both use a lot of the same insides.  ;D

LB,

It's a good thing that your instructor gets to say " I told you so"  What would you be learning if he didn't know the difference ?  ;)

If you find any problems with the 904, I have a 727 here that came off a 360 from a Van, should be heavy duty.

Thanks PG... but I'll put some money on that 727.... the bellhousing will be bigger then my 904... especially if it came out of a van.... ::)

Now, another question so I don't feel like a dumbass... the 727's that were on the 440's and Hemi's had larger bellhousings then those on a small block say... but were the small block housings bigger then a slant six housing?? ??? ???

the big blocks , small blocks & slant use 3 different belhousings
A big part of the problem with new trannys is that people now want smooth shifts even with the huge torque of the Cummins , this wears the tranny out much faster than a hard shift will , the Best thing to do with a new car or truck is make it shift harder
