70Challenger gas tank help
« on: April 28, 2008 - 11:58:45 AM »
I have a 70 Challenger, the bodyshop removed and discarded my old gas tank. I do not know if it had ECS. Does it matter which tank i replace it with? If so how does it matter?
Thanks

If your's had ECS, wouldn't there be some disconnected lines hanging by your gas tank, or have the lines been removed too? Mine didn't have that, so I'm not sure what it would look like. Does your engine bay have a charcoal cannister with return lines?

if ive done my reading correctly only a 70 california car would have the ecs system.  thats where you have 4 lines on the passenger side of the tank and a tube that looks like a capped off big ol water pipe mounted in the trunk on top of the passenger side trunk extension.  71 and up i think they all have the ecs system regardless of state.  my 71 had it but i switched to a 70 tank and sending unit.  that just has one 3/8ths fuel outlet and a 1/4 inch vent tube connection.

This got real simple.  :grinyes:

Go with a 70 tank and no ECS. Seriously, my tank has one line going to the front, and no return. I put a spacer under the carb to help prevent vapor-lock. No problems since.

That's cause you live on the east coast.  Both my Challengers have/had it.

OK guys,

'Spain this... My car is an L.A. built car, but it doesn't have ECS.  I bought it from Florida, so maybe they knew it was coming back East?  :dunno:

I'm sure one of our more historically knowledgeable members will chime in here, but I suspect that it's that exactly.  After all, the LA plant would have built cars for most of the western states.  Do you know if your car is an original Florida car?  It's possible it moved there from somewhere out west.

Mike:
Our cars were only built in 2 plants: Hamtramck or Los Angeles.  So quite a few cars were built in the LA plant that were not for sale in California.

HemiOrange70: As others have said, if you need to order a new tank, you can order one with the ECS setup (for the tubes) or without it.  Notice the pic that Dave posted - If you use the ECS setup (with that pipe), you have to allow room for it in the trunk, and route those rubber tubes.  My '70 was originally a Cali car, so it had ECS.  I took one look at that nasty mess of tubes, and ditched it in favor of a setup without ECS!

So far for 1970 LA built Challengers the furthest east I have seen them delivered (when new of course) was to Chicago.

N95 was required for cars sold new in CA in 1970. I have seen one car ordered from CT with N95 as well, it was requested by the owner.

My '70 Challenger spent most of its life in or around Las Vegas, it doesn't have that extra pipe in the trunk. The tank has been replaced without the extra 4 pipes to connect on the tank but there are 4 hoses hanging down under near the tank. When I filled the Challenger on its trip westward one time fuel started to pour out from some where around the 4 hoses but not from them.   :working:
