Funny you ask that because I just did mine (watched more than helped) at the shop this morning.  The tank does not have to come out, but make sure you are down around a quarter tank full.  It looked very easy.  He just used a screw drive and hammer to spin the retaining disk about half a turn until it popped off, pulled the old unit out and popped the new one in, then reversed the process with the retaining disk.  It took all of about 5 minutes.  Now the disclaimer - This was done on a lift at shoulder height, but I would not think it would be much more difficult if you jack up the rear end and do it on your knees.

Jack up the driver's side rear. Remove driver's side rear tire. I've had mine out a few times.  Taking out is easy. Putting back in is a little more difficult.

  Putting it back is better done as a two-man job, especially is there's still fuel in the tank.

Sounds like a brass punch would be safer...yet i've used a screwdriver a dozen times lol

Good point.  It might have been something else that he used.  He was real cautious with the whole thing (we replaced the fuel lines at the same time).

I always use a brass hammer and punch for this.  I knew a guy who didn't.  When it went off it put him through his garage door.  It was the last thing he ever did.  IMO it is a freak accident to happen, but why take the chance.  The more empty the fuel tank is the more likely for a spark to cause problems.  Fumes explode.  Since it is best to do the sending unit on an empty tank, it makes it a dangerous task if done improperly.

Well this thread had good timing! Put my new sending unit in this afternoon!

Just jacked up the driver's side rear and put it in, didn't even pull the wheel although it probably would be easier if you did. Non-sparking tools is definitely a good idea, although I would think that you're only using the screwdriver to loosen the retaining ring, so everything should still be sealed up at that point. Still much better safe than sorry. I just used a set of lock jaw pliers instead...
