Neil,

Hey bro got a quick question I know you advocate the 512 kit but what about the 528 or 543 kits?  Im assuming its the addition of external oil pick up, but they say that the 528 kit can be made to work with an internal?  What say you????     :feedback:

Longevity / Rod Ratio and also at 528/543 you need some really good flowing heads to make that many cubes work at its potiential...  :2cents:

Yes cubic inches makes power but it has to be supported.... Don I say the 512 is the ticket..... I would have did it if 4.250 stroke cranks were handy then.....

Or if you just wanna say I have a 543 then go for it....

not answering for Neil as Im sure he will chime in......  :2thumbs:

what type of heads do you plan on running.......

I didnt factor the head flow I just assumed it was the external pick up that kept him from recommending those other kits.  440source website said that 512 kit doesnt need that much modification ect compared to the other kits.  It could just be pratacality?  Inquiring minds want to know?

dpending what you want ot build any conbo will work but for longevity I like the 512 for the longer rods , it gives a decent 1.72 rod ratio , you get less piston side loading & more combustion durtaion , longer burn time more torque etc with longer rods/ rod ratio , for racing the larger displacement May help power but for street the 512 offers long life & more then adequate power , basically more CI is Nto nessisary a big advantage
I just did a 512 with ported factory Iron heads , basically you cannot leave the line without the tires spinning no matter how gentile you are with the clutch , , it has yet to be dynoed but should be int he 650 ft lbs torque range with 575 hp  , we are also using a flat tappet solid cam with close to .600 lift , I can spec a cam with over .600 lift as a flat tappet solid using 1.6 rockers

So pretty much what your saying the type of rebuild most of us guys here would be doing the 512 is the way to go due to the extra stress that the biger kits have on the rods and pistions ect.  Im tracking now.  Thanks for the input Neil your the man.

I'm having a 512 440 source kit put together right now.  I had to go with an external sump due to the #1 rod hitting the sump tube.  The builder said he wouldn't recommend the small internal tube with this engine anyway, thought the external line would be better anyway.  Waiting for the kit from Mancini before we can finish the engine and get her on the Dyno.  I will post the numbers for you as I am running the 440 source stealth heads also.

For everyday driving I am actually considering a 496 or something a bit smaller. I have heard from several people that bigger is not always better in a street/strip engine. What say you CP?

496 in the 440 block actually creates a lower rod ratio as they use the 6.76 rod instead of the 7.1" rod so I still prefer the 512 but the piston is shorter , every modification is a trade off, so you have to lose something to gain somewhere else . Virtually any stroker is a monster , even the 451 loses 7 lbs from the rotating mass with keeping the 1.81 rod ratio & should easily beat up a 440 build .... how much more do we really need or can use in a street car ??
Basicaly short rod ratios & shorter pistons will shorten the life of any engine but given most of these cars are toys & rarely see 5000 miles / year maybe rebuilding in 10 years at 50,000 miles or less is not so bad but if it can last 20-25 years why not assuming we will even be allowed to drive them but it could be the last rebuild needed
