need help ID parts on 440

[1970-cuda340]

I have this 440 and it has an alternator bracket I have never seen.Also wondering if anybody can decode what approx. horsepower and what this engine came out of by pics of the block codes.What does the numbers mean?

Here's a little help:

Pic 1 of the stampings on the distributor pad:

8 -  1978 (see below)
T - Trenton engine plant
440 - self-explanatory
E - cast crank
HP - High Performance

Pic 2 - can't help you.

Pic 3 - block casting numbers:

4*13(?)*78 - casting date - April 13th, 1978.  Is this out of an RV?  That might explain the alternator bracket.
4006630-440-78 - Chrysler casting number

Pic 4 is not clear enough to make out the numbers, but they are the formal serial number for the block.  It will often have the VIN of the vehicle it was originally installed in - likely an RV cab/chassis, given the casting date.

Rumor has it that this may have come from a police car. Not 100% sure though. Think this is still a good engine to build or should I find another of an earlier date?

I think a police car of that era should have had a 400, but don't quote me.

Only your machinist can answer if it's a good block.  Here's a good source of info about Chrysler big blocks (and they're supposed to be a good source for parts):

440 "Interceptor", could very well be that?  Did it come with a steel crank?  Im guessing yes.  If Im not mistaken only RV/Trucks came with the steel crank engines after 1971, I would have to guess that the "HP" would fall into that line of engine???

I figured the Inerceptor would be stamped "HP", just didnt know for sure.  As far as the 73's with steel cranks...  I have always read they they discontinued the use of steel cranks beyond 71, other than RV/Truck applications ect.  Thanks for the info though.

A member here has a 72 new yorker with a 440 and it has a steel crank. I have seen the engine and it is still in the car.

Im not crazy am I?  I know I read somewhere that they stopped putting steel cranks in the general 440's after 71?  Has anyone else read this or am I just wrong?

Yer not crazy, but have seen quite a few 72's with forged cranks only 440 though and a few 340

I agree Don, you're not crazy.  If the New Yorker is an early build-date car with a late '71 440, it could easily have a steel crank.  Remember, just because a car is model-year '72 doesn't mean it was actually built or sold in '72.

if it's an RV motor or such, the alt bracket is probably for a leece-neville 100a alternator - big giant looking thing- check the picture from a diplomat, same alternator
