Theres a fluid filled cylinder inside the clutch.

The "clutch" is filled with a viscous fluid.  When the engine is cold, the fluid is thick and serves to couple the fan to the driving pulley, thereby driving the fan. As things come to temperature, the fluid warms up. When the fluid warms up, it gets thinner. The coupling effect between the fan and the hub is reduced, which causes the fan to rotate slower. A slower-speed on the fan improves fuel mileage. It does rotate slower when the engine is warm, but it never totally stops.

That, I don't know.
I would think they would both work well. Just different designs, that's all.

Funny, i always thought it was the oposite.

it works the other way when the fluid is cold the fan slips reducing drag , when the fluid gets hot it expandswhich puts pressure on the clutch locking the fan for increased cooling ,& yes it will cool more efficiently than the flex fan will & help fuel milage as well

I have always heard that the new style 5 blade clutch fans, with a fan shroud, will give you the best cooling.  I used to have a flex fan without a shroud and my 440 would overheat and vapor lock quite often.

I put a stock HD clutch fan in front of my 422 and it runs cooler than my 318 ever did.LOL  It might have something to do with the radiator though.  But I do have a fan shroud to put in still, just got  it in today.  I got the Fan and clutch from the local parts store, it was like 80 bucks for both.

Yeah, sorry about that, thoughts got backwards.

just my  :2cents:  i tried to run flex fan on my 383 years ago. for whatever reason it caused 3 waterpump pulleys to crack.learn my lesson i guess  :dupe: lol... id hate to try to find those in the boneyard now.

As engine/water pump speed increases greater load is placed on the water pump, the viscus fan/clutch disengages with heat and speed freeing up H.P.
In the earlier Dodges the water pump flange used to pull out of the shaft and go through the radiator as the fan dragged more air in through the radiator, I used to put a spot weld on the shaft before fitting to try to over come this problem. One of the reasons was because the fans had an aggressive pitch on them trying to suck more air through at lower speeds. Thats when flex fans first appeared.

Continuing with the topic title, Mancini Racing has a viscous fan package (Looks like a 5-blade fan, clutch, and bolts) for $124.

Here’s the “Stupid question about fans” Will this bolt right up to the stock water pump?
My engine is a 318, stock radiator and shroud.

Thanks in advance,
Ron

Wow, a 4 year old thread. Talk about bringing back from the dead.   :roflsmiley:   Yes, the fan will bolt up to the water pump.
If I cant fix it, it's broke
