Your Method for drilling a hood for hood pins
« on: May 03, 2008 - 11:57:56 AM »
My "Cuda" hood has no holes for a factory set of hood pins. I have a set of pins, i will be getting the factory style brackets for them, then probably test fitting the hood. We'll line it up the best we can and we'll need to mark where the pins need to go through. This hood is not painted so not too worried about damaging the finish, just need the more precise holes we can get.

Thanks!

I used some lipstick on the pins.

Start small and work your way up to size for adjustments.

Mike, if your panels are lined up right , just like stock factory, the hood has the under holes in it. You can put your plates and studs on, use your girlfriends lipstick :roflsmiley:and see if it is in the center. Then use a hole saw for metal. It has a guide drill bit in it for a starter. The hole will be rather big anyways . Look at the chrome top , you will see it is a bit bigger then your studs. Use that for your guide on size. Put tape on top of the hood where the hole comes through when drilling. It keeps the hole clean and from chipping, which you said you didnt care about right now...

On another hood, I got the dimensions from a member nearby and measured where the holes were to be drilled.  I marked them and I used tape around where the holes were going and used a step drill-bit to go into the paint.  Very nerve racking.  Worked pretty good though.

I'm with Al.

Drill the holes in the center of the pre-stamped hole in the underskin. The pins can be adjusted to fit those holes for alignment.

If it was good enough for the factory to do..........

Mike. Mount the hood pins. Then slam the hood shut. And drill at the dents. :poopoke: :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley:

I've used chalk in the past on top of the pin and then closed the hood on it to find the location. Definitely use a step drill bit. It is the only real choice when it comes to sheet metal.

I use a die grinder with a carbide bit to open the hole up to the 5/8" size once I have the center hole drilled out
