Firmfeel or Steerandgear ?
« on: May 04, 2008 - 11:52:39 AM »
Firmfeel and Steerandgear both offer firmer power steering boxes.  The prices are similar, with Steerandgear being a bit cheaper.  I would like feedback from anybody who has used either, and how their experience went.

I have a Firm Feel Stage 2 in my Cuda project, haven't driven it yet but the people there are great and the turn around time was awsome.

My friend just put in a Firm Feel Stage 2 in his '73 Cuda , it's ok but still too loose for me.
He said he's sending his '70 box out to do a Stage 3.
I'll let you guys know how that one is after he gets that one back.

I put in a level 2 steer and gear a few years ago. Never was happy with the firmness.  Over the years it got looser.  Last week I installed a firm feel level 3.  Now I'm very happy.  I should have went FF3 long ago.

Great input-- Thanks everybody.  I would love to have a cheaper or easier solution than going to a FF steering box, but it seems to be the best plan.

I've had 2 done from steer and gear and have been very happy with both. They feel alot closer to rack and pinion steering now and I could never go back to a regular box after having these for around 5 years now. I went with a firm feel from them and they both worked out great.

Steer and Gear apparently has Standard, Firm, Extra Firm or XX Firm available.  Which box did you get, and how does it compare to the steering feel of a newer car?  Has the steering loosened up over time?  I was thinking about the Firm, but after some of the feedback I am considering the extra firm or the firm feel 3.

I have the extra firm on 3 vehicles. Still not quite firm enough for my taste, unless you run a small steering wheel -tuff size.

I am resurrecting this thread to see if the folks who have these units have any further input , a year down the road.

S&G is closer to me so it would be cheaper as far as shipping.....plus a little savings on the actual cost.

Do these companies handle the "firmness upgrades" the same way?

Firm Feels site points out that I could use the 73 unit instead and save $$ on the new pitman arm ($80).

S&G emailed me back when I asked them about this and said

"I can rebuild your 72 gear then you dont need to change pitman arm.  If arm is bad we rebuild arm for       115.00 "

Which got me to thinking......I am planning on replacing the pitman arm since it is as old as the rest of the gear and I figured to be safe I should.  I dont know for sure if it is bad or not.  Clearly, its cheaper to buy a new 73 pitman arm for $50 than spend $130 for a new 72 or have mine rebuilt for $115.

Thoughts on this?

*** update  01/11/10 10:45 am

Ok, now I am confused more than ever....I wrote back to S&G explaining my thinking with going with the 73 steering box....cheaper pitman arm etc. dueto the larger size of the sector shaft n the 73-up boxes...

Here is what they wrote back:

"The older 72 box was built better...to start with 73 chry started to cut corners.  If you are putting disc brakes on car you will need large c/s because front end parts are different"

then, in a later email

"72 arm goes one way 73 goes the other center link will be different also"

I am swapping to disks, using 75 Dart spindles and standard 72 ebody balljoints etc..... What is S&G telling me here???  :dunno:

Sounds like either Firm feel has their info wrong or S&G does...any ideas?

I bought fast-ratio pitman and idler and Level II from FF  to avoid this type of confusion. Not sure what S&G is trying to tell you but I kept my original center link.

But did you use the 73 steering box or a 71?

Its basically two different stories --

Firm Feel says you can use a 73 box on a 72 and NO geometry changes....

S&G says you cant.

So who is right?   :clueless:
