Shadango,  When you go to the alignment shop make sure you use the specs you will find on this site and tell the mechanic to ignore the specs in his alignment computer.

Yep..this guy has already said "no problem" to that.

Have to find the specs again....I remember caster being +3 or 4 if possible....

Found it.

turn the caster to max , set the camber 0- negative .5* , toe in 1/16"up to 1/8 " if it has wide front tires

I wound up with:
Caster 4.0*
Camber -0.5*
Toe in 1/8"

this is more an alignment issue than a steering issue, but I've adjusted my toe several times, and fooled with the eccentric bolts trying to adjust the camber and caster. Best I can get my camber is about -2.0 degrees on each side. When I push the front bolts out and the rears in I get positive camber. There seems to be no middle ground on mine, but maybe I just need to fool some more.
Someone on here said try to go with a little more camber on the right side than the left to help a bit with road crown.

on the ground is fine

What I meant to ask is CAN I set the toe with the car up on jacks?  its easier that way but is it accurate?

I wouldnt think so. I think the front end needs weight on it to make it accurate.
I think the geometry will be different.

throw a towel down there to lay on next to the wheel and go to town. Have to keep getting up and moving from one side to the other, but it's not that hard, unless your car is lowered way down. I use two half inch? wrenches/sockets, and a pipewrench.
Have someone help when you measure the front to rear difference. Makes it easier. You can improvise different tools to help with the job, but I keep it simple as possible.

Well, that wasnt so bad!

Had to have the wife come and hold the tape, but aside from that piece of cake.

I have the solid tube tie rod adjusters so its even easier...juts one wrenh to hold the rod in place and the other to loosen the two nuts...spin by hand and tighten the nuts.

The steering wheel is still 90 degrees off....I didnt feel like messing with it further.....I think I have the toe in at EXACTLY 1/16!

The car rolls better and steers better.....good enough to get her to the alignment shop.  :clapping:

Thanks for the advice!   :2thumbs:

Just as a followup...

The alignment is done and all I can say is WOW!

What a difference from the car I drove last summer/fall.

The steering still feels a bit tight....I think all the new parts need to bed in a little.....but the car handles corners now like its on rails (it should...1" t bars and stiiff add a leafs in the rear).....the cart racks good and the steering is heavy but has a good road feel to it....I thought my Durango had heavy steering....that feels light after driving my fish !  LOL

I didn notice that there is still just a bit of "slop" in the steering wheel....not really sloppy, just a little movement before the wheels turn.....way less than before of course.....I am not worried about it, but was wondering if perhaps I have something installed to tight....like perhaps the idler arm, and that is causing the tightness and the slight lag......??

Overall though, very happy so far with the FF stage 3. !   :2thumbs:

Some Wheaties and a few 12 ounce curls should help with that heavy steering.

<grin>  Just got back from a nice cruise with the wife and kids....it was the first time my wife drove the fish!   She had a smile on her face the whole time.

I am definately liking the steering now.....   :2thumbs:  Glas I went stage 3 so far.....VERY nice at speeds 40 and up.....a little heavy puttering around but not ridiculous.

The care feels like a performance car now, not a luxury boat!   :woohoo:

BIG mistake...NEVER let the wife drive the car.  :nono:  The next thing you know you will go out to the garage to jump in the car for a cruise and you'll see a note on the garage door.  "Honey, I took the fish to the hair dressers.  Can you do laundry while I'm gone"
