Cant remove key
« on: May 04, 2008 - 10:31:34 PM »
I have a 70 Chally,  the ignition key has become stuck.  I cannot turn it back far enough to remove it from the ignition.  It will turn to the start, and on position.  Is there anything this could be besides needing a new ignition switch.

I think You need to rotate the lower column.  I think this one has come up before.

It is part of the 1970 only lockout feature. I think it is explained in the owners manual?

I have tried pushing, pulling, everything I can think of, will have to check it again next weekend.  This could be an idiot error I admit..........

as above rotate the lower column , 70 only was not spring loaded to return & was driven by linkage from the trans , with the rod disconnected the column will rotate trapping the key

Chryco speaks the truth . I had the same problem and didn't try it for a few days (sounded too easy) . The key came right out  :jumping:

just before the column tapers down to go under the dash there is a larger diameter housing , grab it with both hands & rotate it [clockwise I think ] to the end of it`s rotation , you should now be able to remove the key

That worked like a champ Chryco, thank you.  Question now is, how do I keep that from happening again?

Only sure fire way is to re-install the reverse lockout linkage.  Mega Parts sells it I think.

Of course I never had it in mine either since it had headers when I bought it. You just get used to twisting the column when the key won't come out.

how do I keep that from happening again?

Get a small spring and hook it to the arm that sticks out of the column, in the engine compartment. hook it to something that will keep the arm pulled down.
