Anyone try the 440source.com distributors?
« on: May 05, 2008 - 02:30:50 PM »
I've decided to replace my old distributor on my 440 cuda.  It cost almost as much money to by the pieces I need as it does for a new distributor.  Has anyone bought and tried the 440source distributors?  I would probably buy the "street distributor", because I "think" I need the vacuum advance.  If you read the information on 440source you'll notice that it says "no external ignition box is required"  Does that mean the factory ignition box that sits on the fire wall is not needed?

Having a 70, do you have the original points style distributor, or has it been upgraded to electronic ignition? It sounds like your's was upgraded.   :dunno:

I have not tried one of these distributors yet
the pro billet needs an external box Such as Mopar Crane Mallory or MSd
the street one is stand alone like pertronics with no ign box needed , I would be interested in RPM capabilities & ease of advance curve adjustment as well as parts supplied with the dist for adjusting advance curve

It's a 73 cuda, so it has the electronic box on the firewall. Chryco, I'll call them tomorrow and find out the answers to the questions and post them.  Thanks.

You may want to look at the Pro non vacuum type seeing as you have the ECU on the firewal already

Chryco,
I talked to 440 source today regarding the distributor "street distributor" I ordered from them.  They said the RPM capabilities are around 6000. As for the ease of adjusting the advance curve, it sounds like it is very hard to change. Both of the 440 source distributors use an "ink pen style" spring.  No parts are supplied with the distributor.  Also the Pro-Billet distributor will not work with the factory electronic ignition system that came on the 73 Cuda.  He said a more advance system (box) is need.  They said that they are using the pro-billet distributor on the companies 512 stocker with no problems.

So this is what I'm thinking, since 440sources "street distributor" cost me $88 after shipping, and buying new pieces for my stock distributor would probably be around $50\60, I think I'll run this distributor until I rebuild the 440 this winter. Other Mallory distributors seem to run around 250 plus. My 440 runs strong but has a "knock" in it that I haven't found yet.  I think it might be the wrist pin possibly.

If you have any other ideas let me know, thanks.
