I worked on the car over the weekend and finished welding up the front-end today.

First, I cut out my cowl I.D. stamping and welded it into my new cowl. I then welded the whole cowl to the dash support and firewall.

Pic of the ID after I wiped off the primer.

A friend said that I should patch this.  It doesn't look too bad but the hinge area was rusted badly and so was the rear part around the shock tower. I decided to replace it with a new parts, since I've replaced so much already.

While the old inner fender was in, I welded in the inner fender's firewall bracket.

I then bolted in 2 supports, so the radiator support wouldn't move and lose its original position.

I then drilled and air-chiseled out the old inner fender out.

I bolted on the front fender for proper positioning of the inner fender. I wanted to make sure that I was able to set the gaps in and out and side to side.
Welded it in, then ground down the welds.

Etch-primed then applied bondo over the welds.

Did the whole thing again on the driver's side.

After I welded up the holes in the windshield frame and etch primed it, I am now done with the front welding.
XV frame connectors should be here tomorrow, so I can finish welding in the rear floor pans.

Got my XV frame connectors today and jacked them up to the floor. The gaps aren’t too bad. Nothing that a little grinding and welding wire won’t be able to fill.  Good thick steel too.

Before I can weld them in, I have to fix the front of the driver’s side rear frame rail. It’s rusty and full of holes.

And replace some of this to get the strength back.

I'm totally impressed with the work you've done on this car.   If it wasn't a convertible I'm sure you would have passed on it.  Your really doing some great work.  I got a mig welder for Christmas last year and still haven't taken it out of the box.   I'm getting ready to strip my coupe down and get my A500 installed and then strip it down for painting.  Not too much to do as far as rust, trunk and floor pan and dutchman panel.  I'll have a professional do that for me, but I think you've inspired me to take a shot at subframe connectors and maybe torque boxes.  There is only one way to learn.....

Great work and great thread.

Repaired my rear frame rail before I can weld on the connector. Save myself $345 by telling myself not to buy the whole frame rail at the Nationals last month.

Rusty holes on both sides. I’m going to fix it from the inside.

I cut a hole into the pan below the back seat to get to it.  I cut too deep, but I’ll weld those up too. I went down the center of the frame tabs so when I weld the hole closed, the weld seam will be right over the frame tabs on each side.

I cut the inside piece out first so I can cut out and weld the outside, smaller piece in,

I needed some steel.  Lowes sells a 16 ga, 18”x24” plate for $17. I used half of it making these 2 parts. Made a piece out of cardboard then cut it out, in metal.

I welded this piece in very solidly with 3 big welds on each tab on the brackets that go to the front spring hanger.

Made another piece of cardboard, then cut it out of metal, then welded it in. I'm going to weld a piece of angle Iron in here to make it stronger. I sometimes jack up the car under this spot, and some of these start bending upward and bowing outward.

Since it is welded on the inside, I can grind on the outside to round it out without weakening the joints.

I still have to reweld the parking brake cable bracket back on and weld the floor back closed.

Almost time to install my rear floor pans and frame connectors.

Robb, I'm beginning to wonder if there's even going to be any of the original metal left on this car.  Great work!  :2thumbs:

Looks good bro.  You are really going to town.  Good luck with the rest of the resto and please take some more pics if you get the time.  Thanks.

At Monster Mopar Weekend, Sept 20, I picked up some fenders from board member Sprecks and a hood from a friend.

Last weekend, I built some Rolling wheels for the front. After pulling the K-frame, it looks like it might be bent. Good thing that a friend has a spare one for me.

I started working on the rusty driver's side wheelwell, at the front by the door.

I cut out the rot to start making a new piece.

First thing I did was to weld the support brace to the sides. There is a gap here that doesn't provide any support if the rocker were to rust badly.

I hammered out his piece to make a replacement, from a section of another rocker. It still needs a small patch in the middle but will take care of most of the rot after final welding. I added two drain holes under this section. If you know about convertibles, all of the water from rain or washing, comes down the roof and rear gutters and FLOODS this section with water. This is where verts rust badly.
