Fuel starting
« on: May 06, 2008 - 02:12:05 PM »
The Challenger got shut down a while back.

After a bit I tried to cranker her to no avail.

I deducted! and thoughted bout it for while

so I replaced the fuel pump.

now I pour a touch-o gas in the carb and she fires up.

but will not idle or start back w/on fuel in the carb

Could the fuel have gone bad?  How long ago was it shut down?

sounds like the accelerator pump diaphragm has dried up so yes a carb rebuild may be nessisary

When you pump the gas pedal, can you see evidence that gas has been shot down the carb throat?

Hows the fuel filter doin? Also have you run the tank low in fuel recently that you usually dont do. Could have sucked up some junk.

filter is full of crap (installed a glass one so I could watch it)
yes the fuels was run pretty low and the fuel pump crapped out after that

the car will run well, and I can rev it up, I just can not restart w/o adding
gas to the carb or idel.

Again, I'll ask... when you pump the gas pedal, do you see that gas is getting squirted down the throat of the carb? Your carb sounds like it has issues. Accelerator pump out to lunch?   :dunno:

Mike you are a smart man!  and it only took two times to get me to answer... :)

I don't know, as I never got a chance to look, and it was too dark tonight to look.  I will check it out by the end of the week.

I know it must be after it gets started, or it would shut down...but before it is cranked I could not say.  Usually I look, but I have a hard time bending over right now (disk issue)

The carb is a Holley 80457-1 (2007) for what that is worth

thoise carbs are not prone to having accelerator pump issues my guess si the problem is elsewhere

When cars sit around the fuel evoporates from the carby, the gaskets dry out and shrink, dirt in the carby doesn't evoporate just dries out inside jets.  Needle and seat may be sticking.  How good was the carby before you shut it down?  Just my   :2cents:

the carb ran well before. but like dto be kept running every day or atleast once a week.

as a side note.  the fuel leaks down in the filter after she is shut down.

I seldom have seen one leak down...
