Gimmicks, Gimmicks, Gimmicks
« on: May 06, 2008 - 03:33:14 PM »
As if it weren't already bad enough that the politticians are playing parlor tricks to get elected, here comes the boys from Chrysler! Why don't the automakers back off from making huge gas-guzzling engines instead of cheap tricks???!!!! They must think the consumers are stupid....wait a minute...we ARE stupid, because we keep buying these gas guzzling products!

Personally I have been considering purchasing a new Dodge soon and saving me currently a dollar a gallon and soon to be more is a huge savings. Call it what you will but it is great marketing and with no end in sight to high gas prices it will work great. Having cars getting better fuel economy is a good idea but development isn't going to happen over night.

Chrysler is not in the fuel-reduction business, per se.  They are in the business of selling cars.  If their products don't appeal to you, buy elsewhere.  But an incentive to purchase is wrong?  It's no different than a coupon or rebate.

I have to agree with 72hemi on this one.  So many people complain about gas prices and mileage, etc, but very few actually do anything about it.  For those that have made a change in their lifestyle (small car, less driving, etc.), I applaud you.  I for one have no choice because I need a pickup for work, and have no choice as to how many miles I drive because I have to go where the work is.  Something like this plan by Chrysler would certainly make me look at them if and when it comes time to buy a new truck.  The fuel mizer cars are out there, and the builders are making advances with hybrids, but a truck is what it is.  It's the soccer moms (and dads) in the 3 ton Hummers driving Skippy around town that drive me crazy.  They probably do the most complaining, when it's them who could make the biggest difference.  SOrry about the rant, but there's a hundred of them just in my neighborhood.

Guess I just wanted to mostly vent, I'd like to see Chrysler get off their a**es and put hybrids, alternative burning (E85, biodiesel, etc.) vehicles on the market as well. Chrysler will NEVER be anything but a johnny come lately companyif they don't get with the program and start thinking to the future. Even GM and Ford offer alternatives to their customers. I am sure there are alot of loyal customers that want to buy from Chrysler but who also want to wean themselves, in one degree or another, from this never-ending oil nipple this country just seems to love :(

I don't know what it will take before we all wake up to this fact. Maybe $8.00/gallon?

Chrysler has a few hybrids coming out this year and already has several vehicles that are E85 compatible, just for some reason they aren't advertising it all over the place (at least not in California) like the other manufacturers are.

Although they are a little late, they will be coming out with a number of hybrids this year, and there are already a number of E85 models out.  Besides, I believe they were the first to mass produce the multi-displacement technology with the Hemi back in 05 (?), which others have tried to recreate without as much success.  I believe we have been very fortunate up to this point with the gas prices we have been paying.  It does suck to see them continue to go up, but I'm sure if you asked our European and Australian members, they would be tickled pink to pay $4.00/gallon.

Gimmick was my first response, followed by "Hmmm...could replace Clifford with something more modern and get gas for the UAV at a discount for the next three years."  But I hate making car payments and all mine are paid for, so that's out.

I'm of both minds with this.  I agree with 73Chally that the mommy and daddy SUV drivers are the biggest whiners (and how many of them have a mortgage they can no longer afford and can't get out of?), so I have little sympathy there.  But I'm also in agreement with KZ that it would be good to see Chrysler actually put some of that American brain power to work to build something that gets decent gas mileage that people will actually buy.  I think they were on the right track with the Neon, but when they decided to follow the angular styling of the Charger in the Stratus/Avenger (ick!  :puke: ) and the Caliber  :eek4: :puke:, they lost many of us who might have been interested in purchasing a modern, small, fuel-efficient American car.  I don't understand why it's so dang difficult for the domestic manufacturers to get that one right!

I did hear on the radio this afternoon that Chrysler is partnering with Nissan to introduce some more fuel-efficient cars in about three years.  Product planning and lead times being what they are, almost none of the domestics are ready for the price of fuel today, let alone what it will be in the future.  All are too heavily invested in trucks and SUVs.  One would hope that one of the Big 3 CEOs would have a little backroom skunkworks to be prepared, but I suppose  most stockholders would have a conniption at what most would see as a waste of assets.

I also heard today that a Goldman Sachs oil analyst predicted that $200/barrel oil within the next two years was possible.  :eek2:

Hmmm, I just bought my Crossfire from a dealership and it is a certified Pre-owned by Chrysler.  I wonder if I can be included in this...  I doubt it, but it is worth a shot, right?

I wish I was in a better position to buy. Can you imagine ordering an R/T or SRT Challenger and getting a gas card along with it possibly? Whats not to like?

I think the SRT models are out. I read a few articles on the program and it states regular, E85 and diesel. With no mention of premium I don't think the SRT's are elligble otherwise I would go down and buy the new blue Super Bee before the end of the promo, since I am planning on purchasing one of them this year anyways.

Nope, no Challengers, Jeeps or other "specialty vehicles" are eligible for the card.  The card has a time limit on it as well (a year?) which hardly seems worth it if you have to finance the car anyways.  Chrysler does need to take some responsibility and put more models in the public eye that have lower consumption / alternative fuel sources.  You can go to a ford showroom and see a pzev focus next to a guzzler GT...  My grandfather worked as an engineer for Chrysler when they were truly on the cutting edge, and it was a major point of pride for him.  Now, they seem to be pedaling backwards, it kind of makes me sad.

3 years @ 12000 miles a year. Sounds an excellent idea. I would buy a car based on this.
Currently paying $1.80/litre (NZ$6.81 or US$5.37 a gallon) of 91RON

US$2.99 a gallon would be NZ$0.99 a litre - which is what it was in 2001 (I think?)

If you buy a car that gets 30 MPG,  for every $1.00 gas costs above $2.99 you'll save $1,200.   Considering how much a new car costs, doesn't sound like much of a deal to me.  Course, I'm driving a $900 Daytona that gets 40 MPG, so what do I know ?
