340 Stroker with EFI?
« on: May 08, 2008 - 08:34:39 AM »
I'm trying to start a basic outline for my 70 Cuda project and the only question I still have is the engine. The block I have 340 is a 73 block and has the old 8.5 compression which will not do. Here are a few ideas I have had and was wondering about the pros and cons of each. Any help and advice is appreciated. The goal is to make low 12 sec 1/4 mile passes with the 727 and 3.91 gears.

Options
1) Bore .030, cam, heads and pistons upgrade
2) Same as #1 and add 4" Stroke
3) Same as #2 and add EFI for better fuel mileage

My big question is on EFI. Can the Edelbrock EFI kit support a stroked 340? If so, that's probably what I will do because I haven't had much (any) experience with carbs. Thanks!

the info on the Eddy system is poor at best , I found it very difficult to get flow #s for either the injectors or the throttle body so I just buill my own system on a customers 440 , it made 708.8 HP / 415 at the ground on a mustang dyno
the 10 :1 forged pistons are still availble if you go with 340 CI , stroking it you can control the compression with piston choice & head size the stroker will cost a biy more to do but it depends on your budget how far you want to go with it

There's always the adapted mass air flow system from a ford 5.0 (home built), and I've seen http://www.mass-floefi.com/ in one of the magazines.. i think www.moparmusclemagazine.com (bolt on).

Thanks for the tips, I forgot to add that I was looking for the compression to be somewhere inbetween 10:1 and 11:1. I still need to be able to drive it on premuim. The 340 J heads are still good and I might have them ported for better flow.

CP, if you weren't in the great white north, and me in the dirty south, I might just ship the engine to you.

Grundy, read the article and went to the site. If I do go EFI, Mass Air Flow will probably be the guys I go with. Yeah, it's expensive, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.

If you have June's Mopar Muscle, my father's 72 Runner is on page 68. That car is where my restoration bar has been set. Only a First place in the Street Class at the Nats.

"it made 708.8 HP / 415 at the ground on a mustang dyno" :clueless:
I dont think any of the commercial kits would be a bad fit. It's more of a question of adjustability and ease. EFI isnt realy my cup of tea, but low 12s on a 416 is not hard at all, even on street tires. If you want to add boost later, I would suggest a better stand alone management system. It's cheapre buying on once, than one now, and another one later that can do what you want. If you are a Do-it-yourselfer  with a little skill, the Megasquirt systems seem to have a good record, and are very cheap.

If you are going to keep the iron heads, I would not get the compression above 10:1.  If you use Aluminum heads with a good quench, you could get away with 11:1   When you read about the small block dyno engine challenge in Mopar Muscle, they are pushing the limits with iron heads.  I would not run those engines on the street without a higher octane fuel.   Good luck on your build.   :2thumbs:

Let me know how it works - I've been looking at the Edelbrock and Holley EFI systems.  Of course, I've also been considering a 6-pack setup.  But that Edelbrock system looks very interesting.
