front drum to disk
« on: May 08, 2008 - 02:14:32 PM »
I have front drums on the 72 Challenger.

I would love to replace with Disk Breaks, and love to have a sway bar.

I can not afford conversion kits, and as I was willing to wait until I needed to do work, I was ok

however... It looks like the front breaks have crapped out on me...

is there a cheap alternative that will get me disk breaks on the front, with the setup for sway bar (even if not installed at this time)

pulling from another easy to find car etc... (as I am in an area that is difficult to find salvage yards... and too far to aford gas) any help./...

satellite would be a B body.

is the B body a direct fit?

You can adapt front brakes from a bunch of later model Mopars (B, F, J, M-bodies), not too hard to do.  Somewhere around here I have a copy of an old Mopar Muscle article (or maybe even High Performance Mopar!) that details which cars can act as donors and what to grab off them.  If I can find it and you have access to a fax machine, I'll fax it to you.  Send me a PM with a fax number.

Yup, I just purchased some from Dr-Diff. 11.75" cop rated brakes. About as big as one can go safely with 15" rims. Direct bolt in too. Talk to Cass, he'll give you what you need. My kit was $850 all new ready to install.  :2cents:

Mid 70's A body disc are what I have. They fit the 70 Challenger drum brake line.  :grinyes:

Used disc brake spindles and caliper adapters from a donor car $50-100.
New rotors bearings and seals $150-180
New calipers with hardware and pads $85-100
Total cost involved $285-380 with careful shopping.

Cars that are relatively easy and cheap to find disc brakes on; 73 and up B bodies, 74 and up A bodies, 76-84 FJM bodies.

There are after market sway bars that are designed to mount on cars that were not originally equiped with sway bars. The bars mount with original style hardware to the K frame and a special L bracket to mount to the lower shock mount so you don't need original sway bar control arms. However, if you really do want original style sway bar control arms, I believe Scarebird is reproducing a weld on sway bar bracket that look like originals. These sway bars can be found on Ebay for as little as $100. Browse the ads on here and you can also find sway bar deals.

I put a set of front discs off of a 76 Dart onto my Challenger. (need the spindle and all)  They fit perfect and the replacement parts are cheap.  Hope this helps   :2thumbs:

That's not the article I have, but at first glance, it looks even more complete.  That should do it for you.

the Cordoba brakes will work sort of , the spindle needs to be off a Volare or 5th Ave to use the larger 12 " discs , but you still need the caliper adapter
