Some people????
« on: May 08, 2008 - 08:37:28 PM »
I have been calling and emailing about a 70 Barracuda for four days.  The add says “ 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, 340 Auto, call or email for information. $17,000 OBO”.  Today I finally get a hold of the guy.  I tell him that I have been trying to get a hold of him for four days.  He tells me he doesn’t check his emails and he usually doesn’t answer this phone #.  Huh?  Why would he put them in the ad if he doesn’t check them regularly?  It gets better, after talking to the guy for 5 minutes about the car, he says that a lot of people have contacted him about the car and they have told him his car is worth more than $20,000 and although the ad says $17,000 OBO he will now only accept $20,000 cash.  Of course no one has paid him that amount, but they have told him its worth that much.  If someone doesn’t plan on buying the car, why would they tell him he is asking to little for the car?  I know they guy can ask what ever he wants for it and I will only pay what I think its worth….but gees why so much BS over a car.  :pullinghair:  :banghead:

Thanks for letting me vent.

Gotta hate that, I've looked at cars and shown interest (but not so much he rubs his hands). I call back the next day to proceed and he's had a change of heart and doesn't want to sell, not at the original asking price and if I still want it it's going to be $4K more - WTF!? PASS. Stupid ass half, takes two of him to make an a$$hole.

That really should be illegal. If the guy post up a price then that is what he should be willing to take. Just my 2 cents.

Unfortunately I have seen more more jerks like this when dealing with Mopars. :swear: The rarity coupled with the desireability make people more prone to peckerwoodism.  :banghead:

Thanks everyone.  I think I may just take only the cash I think it's worth and no more.

Maybe if he see the green $$$$, he will change his tune!

I will tell him it is a one time offer, and if he wants to wait or askes for more $$$, I will walk away.

Turn about is fair play.  :2thumbs:

It sounds like a possible scam.

You show up at his meeting place with cash, get robbed. It has happened before, so take friends and proceed with caution.  :2cents:

I think a lot of times people who "know" these cars or just want to shoot he breeze call up these sellers with no intension of buying but just have nothing else better to do then to think they are helping out the seller by telling them that they are selling the car for too low a price but in reality they later are patting themselves on the back for doing such a noble thing helping out another fellow car guy because they think they know it all...  :faint:

Yep, not fair what he did to you.  The old "bait and switch".

I know when that happens, it really sucks, and I think he went about it in the wrong way. He should have corrected the ad, or pulled it and put a new ad out. But it's his car, and he can ask whatever he wants for it. I'm sure that most people, if they were told that something they are selling is worth more than they are asking, would correct their price. It's only human nature.

Put your self in his shoes. Lets say that you have a NOS 71 Cuda grill that you decide to sell, and you dont know what its worth. You advertise it for $200. One of your good CCC buddies, says "Hey, those grills are going for $3k on eBay". What would you do? Sell it to somebody for $200 because they saw your ad, and lose $2800, or sell it on eBay?

I think that you are letting emotion or principle affect your judgement. I mean, dont let the fact that he advertised it for 17 and now wants 20 stop you from making a good deal. Look the car over. If you think its worth the 20, and you have the money, buy it. If you dont think its worth it, or you dont have the money, offer him what you are willing to pay, and leave your phone number.

If he sells it to someone else, then you didnt lose anything, because to you it wasnt worth it.

If no one meets his price, he'll get tired of sitting on it, and might take you up on your offer. Just bug him about it every couple of weeks to let him know you are still interested, and in case he loses your number.
