............ and you don't want to put a 727 in it?

:iagree: Fits in the exact same position as the 904 but a 727 is a h3ll of a lot stronger gearbox to start with.

My impression was that if built right, a 904 can definitely withstand a tweaked 340 and draw less HP from the crank.

To stay on topic I would make sure you have the following:

Motor mounts, bolted to the engine
Towels, blankets, furniture pads to protect body and paint
A 2 ton or better engine Hoist
Adjustable leveler arm.  This is crucial to an easy install.
A good friend

The trans crossmember should be bolted to one side of the frame only, if at all, so you can slide the transmission tail shaft  through the tunnel without damaging anything.  Also, you should cover that output shaft with a rag and some tape so it doesn't scrape against anything.  Preventing damage should be the top priority, if you can't get the engine in without damaging something, get some experienced help.

Flywheels are for manual trannies, you need a flexplate.  I used the B&M flex plate for small block chryslers.

It's much easier to assemble the engine-flexplate-torque coverter-tranny outside the car and maneuver the whole thing in as a single unit unless you're in a real auto shop.  Put the thing in dry too, dont put in any fluids in the engine or trans.  besides making a huge mess, it will make the whole thing a lot heavier.

If you're putting headers on this engine, you should hang them from the inner fender walls, drop the engine in over them, and then bolt them up.  You cant really maneuver the rig if the headers are bolted to the block, and putting them on after the engine is in, requires lifting the block anyways.

What year is the 340?  If it is a later 340 then you will need a special flexplate for it.

I have a 904 behind my 422 right now and it seems to be holding well.  I put in a huge tranny cooler though.lol

I installed the tranny first then the engine, and depending on the headers you may need to jack up the motor, the Doug's headers didn't require that.

Leave the motor mount bolts a bit loose so you can manuver the engine in and then tighten them before you bolt up the headers(ask me how I know LOL).

The leveler makes it an easy job, I put mine in by myself with no scratches.

Take yout time, I also installed the accessories(Alternator, Pwr Steering pump, brackets etc) much easier than in the Engine Bay.

If it is a 72-up 340 with the Cast Crank Damper on the front you will need a special flexplate for a 904 tranny(727 for that matter) if you plan on using a nuetral balance converter.  let us know, I have a 904 flexplate from B+M that I never used if you need one.

Tom

The Balancer will say right on it to use with cast crank, or something similar. :2thumbs:  or it could have an aftermarket balancer with weights on it.

If it is a cast crank 340 and you use a stock flexplate and converter,no one will show a converter for a 904/340 since they didn't come behind 340's from the factory.

This is what a stock converter for a cast 340/727 would look like as far as balance weights on the converter.

( a 904 would have to be the same weights )

I would not worry about the strength of your 904 as long as you do not plan to put slicks on and go racing.  I have a 904 behind my 360 and have not had any issues.   :2thumbs:
