Fair paint price
« on: May 09, 2008 - 10:41:15 PM »
In the next month or so I'll be pricing a paint job . All the hood and door and trunk jams are done . Bumpers , door handles , marker lights , tail lights, grill is out , Has a vinyl roof , I'll put it back together .

All I want is 2 small dents fixed , factory paint job and RT decals put on . (my decals)

I know prices vary according to who paints and where you are . I was thinking a grand is close . Anyone care to guess ?

A grand sounds cheap to me. Is it going to be done in a paint booth? Heck just good paint materials alone can cost 3 to 5 hundred. Are you plannong on using a high quality clear coat? Body work alone to fix those 2 dents will be a few hours depends on your size and location of the dents. Good luck and keep us posted on what it actually ends up costing you.

Is it in primer or still have factory paint?  I'd say at least $2500 to $3000 for a reputable shop.  Just depends on how good you want it to look.

I just paid $750 for 1 - 1/2 gallons of Hemi Orange, and that was the shop price.  What kind of body work will you have done other than the 2 dents?  Will they prime and block the whole car, wet sand, clear coat and buff, etc?  I would think for a good paint job you will be looking at minimum $3-$5K.  If you are only interested in a driver, then go to Maaco ot Earl Scheib for about a grand.

Don't go to maaco or earl schieb! You'd be better off doing it yourself! You'll likely end up with sand scratches left over, and the paint won't last. As far as price, it depends on where you're at. If its already prepped and primered with two extra dents, then I'd say around 2K. The paint and materials will cost over 500 bucks alone, and labor for a good shop will be at least 75 bucks an hour. If its got factory paint still it'll be more like $5K for a decent job.

I say this because I used to do bodywork at a British car resto shop. The last full job I did was about $7K, but that was stripping the car down and doing the jambs etc. But when I was painting my buddys' cars (I was just out of high school),just sanding, priming, and painting I was asking $1k and only making a couple hundred bucks. That was a one week turn around, and that was 10 years ago. And that wasn't taking it to bare metal!

In 2004 I had my Cuda ready to paint with all the jams painted and I had the base clear bought already to paint the car. The cheapest I was quoted was $2,400.00 and they said I could drop it off one day and pick it up the next. I thought it was a little high and rented a paint booth for a weekend and a buddy and I painted the car. I would say somewhere around $2,500 to $3,000 is what you are looking at depending on the shop.

I have to agree the materials to do a decent job will be $1000
not sure what quality you want but if you are going to use $1000 worth of materials might as well not waste it , spend enouhg to make it right

My car is going to paint this month. I have fenders , hood , decklid and both valances to be replaced, no other body work. I am buying all of the metal and the work will be in the neighborhood of $4500.

You guys are scaring the heck out of me .The paint is $100.00 per gallon , I've gone through a few doing the under side .Paint ,thinner, primer, sand paper , little body filler
,tape, paper $400.00 . As for labor we are talking a half car . More then $1500.00 I'll try it myself .

All we are talking about is the surface of 2 fenders, 2 doors ,2 quarters , hood and trunk . It has a full vinyl top . I know everyone has to eat but come on . I guess things like this is why I do most things for myself . I think $1100.00 for a days work is pretty dam good . I was going to put it all back together .

Unfortunately that's the way it is today.  In reality you could probably get a paint job you would be happy with in the $1-$2K range, but I don't think you will find a shop willing to do what they would consider a half-hearted effort.  I don't mean to offend, but any true restoration shop isn't going to take a care in for a full paint, and not prime and block the whole thing, no matter what kind of prep work you did, unless it is someone you know and work a deal with ahead of time.  As for $100 a gallon, what kind of paint are you using?  That is incredibly cheap by any automotive paint standards.  If your ceiling is around $1K, you will have to do it yourself.

Maybe You an work a deal with someone, but if you have dents to fix then it won't be done in 1 day.  I'm guessing you want Single Stage paint and no buffing.  You might be able to find a collision shop to do it for you.  When I got mine painted the buffing was almost as much as the paint job.  But that is what makes the paint pop. :picture:

A good SS paint will shine nice too though, let us know.  I might try and paint a whole car next winter, my wifes Barracuda needs some freshening.

1000 is really low.  I got a "friend" price quote that came in at about 3200 and that was with me providing the lower quarter panel patches and doing all the trim removal myself before they get to it.

I wouldn't trust a $1000 paint job, You get what you pay for.  I agree with the $3000 price range

I'm just going through this on my son's 68 sport fury.  All the body work is done, all jams and gaps were shot by us.  All trim, locks, door handles, grill, etc removed, basically minimal masking to be done.  They will step sand, shoot sealer and paint with single stage paint at my buddy's shop in the booth for 1500-2000.
