904 and 727 Dimension Differences......

So i was getting ready to order my headers and i see: will not work with 727

can anyone tell me where they think there would be a problem?? these are the Dougs D453 headers that Tom is running

I just happen to have a pic of a 904 and a 518 next to each other.  Just pulled the 904 out 45 minutes ago.  I took some pics for the 518 conversion.  The front 2/3rds of a 518 is the same size as a 727 without the bigger tail shaft. the header's  probably hug the tranny around the bellhousing. The pan on the 727 or 518 also has a little hump that juts out on the passenger side that the header might hit.

Im just trying to figure out if I can work with it. You know, now that i think, the Starter sticks out the most, and they have to be in the same spot for both trans, so if its something stupid like an ear or the lines, i bet i could work around it....

727 or 904 should not make a difference on headers.

I like the sound of that.... I didnt think so, but Ive never run a 904, or should i say I have more experience with 727's

I'd bet the difference is the trans pan. You'll see the 727 sticks out a bit where the dipstick tube goes in. The 904 doesn't. I've got a 727 in a Gremlin (yeah, go ahead and laugh) and the headers are Hooker Super Comps. When I tightened the header bolts the passenger side collector was hitting the trans pan where the dipstick tube goes in. I shimmed it at the head so it wouldn't hit. I'd bet if I had a 904 instead I wouldn't have that problem.

It doesn't make sense (to me) for a company to make a set of headers that would fit a 904 but not a 727,but the 727's would fit where there is a 904.

Could the difference be interference with the kick-down linkage?    What I mean is...a set of headers clears the 904 linkage, but not the 727. I'm grasping at straws here.

The linkage between the two is the same.

Looking at my Doug's headers the only place that is even remotely close is by the  starter, and even there is at least an inch away from the bellhousing area.

I tried to find some old threads where posters say they are using the dougs w/727 but i can't find them, maybe they got lost in a server dump.

Thanks for keeping this one alive guys. I got a reply on ForAbodiesOnly.com that a guy was running a 360/ 727 set up in a Dart.... No problems. another guy said that the starter would get hot after a while and it was hard to start. Im lined up with getting a set from a guy on there that has not been used, he installed them but he chose not to alter the Zbar on his 4spd. So, i may save like $100 with a few minor scratches... money is money....

Ok, so i finally called Petronix. The issue with Doug's D453's not fitting is simply the fact that a mini starter is needed. They did say that was for a Mopar Mini starter, but i wouldnt think the others are very different.

I'll bet they lose alot of business when they state up front that it wont fit at all..... 

So, i should finally be ordering this coming week. The guy on Abodies decided to keep his, no biggie.
