well, i got it in, but i am not getting any better gas mileage, seems like it went down some. i dont ping anymore though. vacuum advance is working now. so there is good and bad with this. i am wondering if my issue may be in the jets of the carb. i got it off ebay, rebuilt it twice now by different folks. hmmmm. it seems to be a good carb, no warpage. any help please

How do the plugs look?  I have my intitial timing on my SB at 14 advanced.  I think this cleans up the idle but don't know if it helps with mileage.  Does it seem to run fine?  Stumbling, bogging, etc present?  Try filling the tank up to the top and driving it noting the mileage and fill it up againt to verify mileage.  Make sure you speedo is close too.

My mileage is way down from the 318 4bbl I had, I got 18+ on the Highway before. I bet I' getting about 12 now with the 422.LOL

the plugs that i took out had carbon on the base of the plug. those were before the new dist. i just put in new plugs. will pull them tomorrow and let you know. I am at 8 degrees advance, but only a little sluggish on take off. my speedo is dead on (just rebuilt and checked in the car). i checked the mileage a couple times and i am at about 8-9 miles per gallon.  :walkaway: something is wrong here. I have a 383 with a bit of a cam and a 30 overbore, 727 auto, and a 323 8 3/4 rear. way too much gas being used with gas prices the way that they are

set the advance higher 12* or os the plugs must be dark , could be float level in the carb , mixture settings, imternal leaks in tha carb have you tightened the screws that hold the carb together ?

i have tightened down the bolts for the carb, and have readjusted the floats to facory specs. I will adjust the advance this morning and post an update on how she performs. i will pull two plugs today too and post pics. I am going up to see Al next weekend and want to get the best mileage that i can so that we can cruise and have a good time while i am there. I am thinking that it may be time for an eddy carb.

ok,bumped it up to 15 degrees today, runs better, gas mileage got way better. (how does he know, i had 9 WOT long runs, and only used 1/2 a 1/8th tank. i have driven 25 miles and havent used the other half) my total advance with the vacuum advance hooked up is 55 degrees, is this too much or about right? thank you so much to everyone that has helped. how do i know if i am at the right base level advance?

add more timing at idle see if throttle response improves
I would eithe rdisconnect the vaccum advance or at least start dialing it out
