    650 carb on a 383

    I have a 750 Holley on the RR ans it seems to run rich. The car run perfict but the tail pipse are black. I've tried jets and differet power valved but the black pipes are still there. Right now I have a 750 Carter on it but I haven't driven it enough to see it it's leaner yet. I also bought a 650 DBL pumper off ebay last week. Do you guys have a thought if it may be to small on the 383?

    A 750 Holley is perfect on a 383 , judging mixture by the tips will not work

    i still run the factory 625 CFM carter, seems to do good.

    Although I agree that a 750 would be ideal, I ran a 650 double pumper and a pair of headers on a stock 69 Roadrunner 383 for years.  It ran pretty hard, and never gave me any trouble.

    I just changed the plugs last weekend and they were black also.

    ok so you are rich , check the metering block gasket first for  leak into tthe power valve & check the float levels , make a note of the jet size as well you should be in the 68-72 range

    You have to remove the fuel bowl from your carb to see what's in there as far as jets.

    are they marked? i have taken the top of the carb off (Carter) and can see the jets, but dont know what size they are.....  :feedback:

    Assuming Carter jets are like Holley's, there is a number punched into them to tell the size. You need to remove them to see it though.

    Carter / Eddy have the # stamped into them but approx 1/10 the size good luck seeing the #

    Would these be the jets?
    I stripped my Holley and got it running v nicely after a thorough clean up, but have no clue of its size. How would one know.
    It is fixed on a 400 engine and really performing very well.
    Is there a Holley chart with all the relevant numbers on it.
    Is the CFM constant with the jet sizes, or one can have a certain CFM and still play around with the jets?
    Mine have a 582 stamped on them. What does that mean?

    the jets are 58 the 2 is upside down & is a close tolerance jet
    I would also replace the power valve as it a cheap aftermarket one not Holley
