Rear Drum Brakes - How'd I Do?

Anyone wanna give me a crash course on putting rear brakes back together?  I've got the driver's side apart, just can't figure out how to get the new ones back on.....73 Cuda.....

Robert,

The job will be a lot easier with the right tools - makes all the difference in the world.  Get down to your local parts store and get these.  An extra set of hands to keep the shoes steady while you re-pin the retaining springs is also helpful.

Here's a link to a site with the assembly process in pics.  It's for a GM Delco system, but the Bendix system is about the same.  Leave one side assembled to act as a model while you assemble the other side.

Well this is what I came up with.....I think it's right....can some people confirm?

Yup.....one thing I missed what the "jesus" clip which I noticed was missing in the pics when I posted them above....so that's fixed now.

One thing I did have to use again was the old yellow right spring, but I had to use it on the left.  My old shoes had a small hole on the left side where as the new shoes have a bigger hole so the small black spring won't fit in the hole....it just slips right out.  So I looked at the pics you sent me and yours has a yellow spring on the left side going to the small hole, so I just did that.  It should be ok, right?    It's not loose or anything....

Robert, it looks good to me.  Word to the wise, if you ever have to do it again, spend a few bucks on new hardware.  Odds are the springs will be fine, but they are subject to a lot of heat and potential fatigue back there, especially if you use them hard.  New hardware is cheap - the kit for both rear drums was less than $20.00.  I consider it money well-spent.

Took your advice and got the Brake Drum - Self Adjusting Kit from AutoZone http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,32825/initialAction,partProductDetail/initialpartType,01927/initialR,APP1295636/initialvehicleId,1417501/shopping/selectZip.htm today and now both sides are complete!  Just gotta get that pesky, rusty rubber brake line off the rear now.....
