Just ordered my 543 kit
« on: May 16, 2008 - 04:53:17 PM »
Already bought the 440 Source aluminum heads and they are sweet. Ordered the 543 kit and I was dissapointed that the opinions on it ran so low. Going to take me a while before I can build it. With an engine like that everyone is recommending a belt drive timing set. $600. Then I have to figure out the external oil lines. The compression ratio is 9.91, I wanted 10.5 with the aluminum heads. Milling the heads would bring it up but then I would have to worry about less piston to valve clearance. I'm gonna be doing some studying on cams for this engine anyway. There's a lot of good cams out there. I upgraded to the I beam rods for an extra 70 bucks for a total of $1956. The heads, bolts and plugs almost $1000. $3000. is not bad for motor your gonna have. Realizing that you have to build the drive train to support the engine there's gonna be some serious bucks in it.

Could someone do a desktop dyno and give some HP figures on this combo? Around a 550 lift cam and 850 carb. My new puter doesn't have a floppy drive.

I did a post in the proven engines section..... even fully ported those heads dont flow enough to support 543 cubes and yours look stockand also 9.9 to 1 wont make it run optimal either and way to small of a cam......  maybe they will let you send back the 543 kit for the 512 :2cents:

Mine started out at $4000 and ended up at $13500 to build everything from fan to clutch and machining. Sorry to burst your bubble there.  :blah:

Pretty much what these guys said. The heads are WAY too small for that cubic inch. Teh block MUST have some serious work to stay stable long term. It needs the girdle and caps at minimum, and the block better be perfect in terms of casting. The cams you shoudl START with are in the .600 lift range. Those will be hi torque, low hp cams. I would be planning to run 1.6 rockers (dont forget to enlarge the pushrod holes for the extra clearance). The belt drive is not a must have, but it will help the block live too with reduced harmonics. Teh  heads to begin with are Indy -1s, and I'd have the ported. It doesnt sound like you have done the right amount of homework for this engine. Be careful, or you'll be doing it more than once.

You have to share the story behind these rods and pistons.  I agree with CP, you can see the support rail for the rings.

so does that mean you think 440 source stuff is junk or ???  :dunno:
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

ntstlgl1970 I believe the market has a very well desired place for 440 stuff....... I am anxiously waiting on the 440 source blocks that are supposed to support 1500HP which would be ideal for my procharger setup I wanna do! I have a feeling the block will be there best sellers...
