340 Rebuild Help
« on: May 17, 2008 - 01:39:23 PM »

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice on re-building Dads 340ci 4bbl engine in his 1973 'Cuda. It's a good engine as is and was fine when pulled from the bay but I'd like it to be more streetable rpm wise and perhaps pushing the 400hp mark. Dad doesn't want anything too wild, just a nice cruiser with power there when needed. I purchased some NOS truck 3.08 heads a year or so back and would like to use these. It currently has W2 heads with some custom porting.

I would like to put the 3.08 heads on, a new manifold and a lower rpm street cam. The manifold we buy HAS to to accept a 340 4bbl Shaker set up. It has a hi-rise on now but we don't mind losing a little hp and high end rpm to fit the Shaker. All items will be installed professional but I'd like the manifold to be a direct bolt on and matched as possible to the 3.08 heads. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Carl

Current Cylinder heads: Factory W2 oval port intakes, D Port exhausts extensive port, bowl and combustion chamber modifications, hardened exhaust valve seat inserts, Ferrea 2.02 intakes, 1.6 exhausts. Comp-Cams 995-16 valve springs 1.70” installed height, 130lbs at the seat. Comp-Cams 740-16 10 degree retainers and 10 degree valve locks. Crane roller rockers 1.5 ratio. Offset intake rockers, straight exhaust rockers.

Current Camshaft: Comp-Cams 20-224-4 extreme energy, 110 degree lobe centers, .488” intake valve lift, .491” exhaust valve lift, 230 degree duration @ .50” intake, 236 degree duration @ .50” exhaust. RPM operating range 1800rpm-6000rpm. Comp-Cams custom length pushrods, Comp-Cams hydraulic lifters, JR double row steel timing gear set.

Current Other: A 450hp Rated 340 Steel crank, Hi volume sump and oil pump, intake and heads all port matched, HEI MSD  650cfm Mighty Demon (mechanical secondary’s). Forged pistons and penned rods. Is there any intake you can get so you can use the W2 heads? Those are sure some good power makers. Maybe an intake, cam and spring change is all you need? You did not list the compression and it sounds like its a pump gas engine. I have a 340 and would love to have W2 heads on it.

Not sure on compression ratio sorry, I gave all the info I could. :crying: It's definitely a pump gas engine. From doing searches and posting a thread a year and a half ago, I was told by Chryco and a few others that the 308 heads simply rock. Big dyno increases from just head swaps. As we're putting a Shaker set up on I'm guessing this limits manifold choice. Would a stock M1 aluminum intake be too little push for a warm/mild engine build?

So far, this is what I have come up with:

Heads: 308 Swirl Head casting, increase the intake valve to 2.02”
Intake Manifold: Edelbrock Performer Air Gap RPM
Cam??? lol Not sure yet.....

Thanks!

Oh sorry Carl, I was not realizing that you are talking about magnum swirl port heads. I was thinking old x or j heads for some reason. Now I see why you want to put them on, they are supposed to be even better than W2's. Sorry for the confusion  How many intakes for the 308 heads have you found?

No need to be sorry bud.

Intakes, lol, basically none. Doing searches now, not sure on availability though as they were dropped in the mid 90s? The air gap seems to be my best bet, not sure if it will allow us to run the Shaker set up though.  :-\

Looking at the Edelbrock Airgap and most of Eddies series recommend 750cfm carb as the smallest. I'm running a Demon 650cfm and that seemed grunty enough at the time. Won't a 750cfm be over carbing my 340? They even list up to 800cfm to use with their intakes!? I'm sure it'll be fine to run that much cfm, just checking lol. Bugger, that may mean a new carb is in order.....why oh why do cars = being broke.  :-[

EDIT - Not that Dad wants to spend money but is it worth looking at a EFI kit at this stage?
I'm doubting very much I'll find anything to suit the 308 heads though.

Here is the bump stick that I have for my 340:
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=631&sb=2

This was recommended from the engine shop that will be rebuiding mine.

The line up is the original Thermoquad, Edelbrock LD340 intake, J Heads, 340 30 over, 2-2.5k stall converter, 727, 3:23 rear with sure grip.

They estimated around 400 ponies.

Don't know if this helps or not.

Just a hunch here but isnt your dads daily driver an SRT8 300C? If so I would be willing to bet that an efi setup is exactly what he would like in that 'Cuda. I think for the money it would greatly enhance the experience of a classic musclecar while allowing such things as autostart from a key fob to be an option. Autostart is a great option only if you want to precool or preheat your car. If you live in a mild climate something like that might not even be needed. EFI would certainly make starting a dream, acceleration would be enhanced and everyday driveability also.

Yup, his, well, for better wording "Mums" who doesn't drive, have a SRT8. You are spot on though, Dad loves the car for what it is, an American V8 "muscle car" (pony) but close enough. He just loves the sound of the classic V8s and after seeing my cars, projects etc gave him a real taste of Mopars. This will be more a weekend toy than anything else but to have it start, idle and run more like a modern engine for him (IMO) would be better.

As I said, he's a "raw" fan of E-Bodies, 70-71's, #'s matching and rare options etc don't mean much to him, he sees the cars as he sees them and likes what he likes despite "trends". He loves his circle lights, likes the shaker hood, Go wing, etc, so it's not going to be a "correct" car but neither are mine and we'll be building it to suit him. I will have a look around for some EFI set ups for 340s, any input in that matter is also appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Carl

Ps: Slotts, never a waste of time mate, sounds like you're miles a head of Dad and I!  :clapping:

What is the stock manifold height on a 340? I can't make out what manifold we were running on Dads (pictured below). Mopar dual plane something? Just trying to gather clearance for the Shaker bubble and set up. The Edelbrock Pro-Flo intake is measured at 5.78" front and 6.78" rear so just trying to get an idea. $2,700 isn't as bad as I thought for a kit, about as close to bolt on as us Mopar guys can get. Just trying to find info on what heads they'll work with, may have to call. All they state on their info specs is: "Works with 340/360 heads". I can use either W2 or 308s but obviously need to make sure first.

The good thing about an efi setup is that even if you use something tall like a victor intake you can make some or all of that extra height back up with the shorter throttle body

so you are wanting to detune it a little....  :working: if so I would just say throw on thicker head gaskets to lower compression / HP and leave the rest alone...  :2cents: but yea the fuel injection would be nice...  :working:

I would use a k56/k58 engle cam or a similar Lunati Voodoo with a Weiand Stealth or Action + intake ,  I cannot think of a low rise single plane like the Street Dom for th small block

Thanks CP, I was thinking about the K56 from my previous thread a while ago.

What is your opinion on the Edelbrock EFI systems and do you know if they work with the W2 & 308 heads?  :dunno:

Shelbydogg like the Eddy EFI , I have not tried it yet , the efi will bolt to the 308 heads but the W2 use a totally different intake , you could use a Accufab Throttle body they are 1/2 the height of the carbs & would allow room for a 2 " taller intake , if you want to get very creative you could have injector bungs welded into the W2 intake & adapt a EFI to the W2 & maybe still fit under a shaker hood , the shaker would hide all of the EFI :2thumbs:
