Wiring Question #6384
« on: May 18, 2008 - 07:58:30 PM »
I'm doing a complete M&H wiring redo on my Challenger and am finding the original wiring was hacked up so much that I can't sort some items out.  I'm trying to determine what wires go to the ballest resistor on my new harness because the hookup don't seem to match the new harness.  I've got these wires with plastic couples and a gray wire that in the area, but they don't match colors or hookups on the old harness.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

4 prong ballast resistor.   I believe the 2 blues first and the 3 set second. The gray wire may be the oil sending unit.

Thanks Moparal  :2thumbs: Now that you mentioned it, that gray wire does go to an original Mopar oil sending unit.  My 70 Charger has that type of connector.  Looks like I'll need to get a four prong ballast resistor!  Thanks for the help.

I'm kinda sure the 3 wire is when it jumps over for 12v start. On the ignition you have a start and a run.

You can convert your wires to work with a two prong ballast. Its pretty easy to do and there  are a lot of instructions and diagrams laying around this site and other  mopar sites. Yes the gray wire is for the oil sending unit. I did the conversion to my year one harness last month.

I kinda hate to hack up the new harness unless it's absolutely needed (voids the warrenty too).  The car currently has a 2-prong resistor with an Orange box/electronic ignition.  Will the 4-prong resistor work O.K. with this set up or does it matter?

the orange box dosen`t use the green wire from the ballast all you need is the dk blue on one end & the blue& brown on the other end to work correctly

CP,
Do I just need to clip the wires from the new 4-prong connector, hook them up the old 2-prong connectors and then orphan the green wire (tape off and hide)?  Thanks.

That will work for you
the end with the double blue can be used as a spare 12v power source if you want to add anything later , the green can be cut off & taped into the harness

Just out of curiousity, If I decided not to hack the new wiring would the 4-prong ballast work with the orange box electronic ignition as is?  Another words, could I just plug and play if I got a 4-pronger?  Thanks

it will work just fine , the pin that is powered by the other side of the ballast  simply doesn`t exist on the orange box
