factory tach? or aftermarket?

not positive on the factory tach, but in general they will pickup off the negative coil terminal

The original tach gets it signal from the "-" side of the coil, but if your's hasn't been rebuilt, I'll bet it is toast. They only last a little longer than the original clocks did.   :stomp:

it worked up until i had a fire under the hood. i just thought that maybe the wiring got toasted and never got hooked back up right, how would i check it? that is the gauge that i hate seeing dead the most

as long as you connect the wire to - coil & have power to the guage it should work , how accurate it may be is another story

with points the connections to the coil are virtually the same , you had a black wire from the dist to the coil - terminal this is replaced by a black wire with yellow trace to the - coil ,there would be a second grey wire to the negative coil for the tach that needs to be reconnected to - coil for the tach to work

Guys,

The original tach has a heavy needle, so it doesn't repond as quickly as the after-market tachs do. Once you get it rebuilt and calibrated, you will enjoy it. I watch that more than my speedometer. I had mine done here...  http://www.performancecargraphics.com/
