Which cars to keep.
« on: May 20, 2008 - 06:57:42 AM »
Heres my delema. After finding a killer deal on a 02 Grand caravan Sport my wife and I now have 3 vehicles. 1 is a 1996 Volvo 850 wagon with 110K the car  is in excellent both inside and out. We own this car. The 850 does have some needs the A/C is out ( estimate 1500 to repair) and it needs shocks and struts ( estimate 1000) average MPG 22 The 2nd car is a 03 Volvo S-60 with a reasonable monthly payment 83K all the bells and whistles.Average MPG 27 The third is a Grand Caravan 02 Sport 70K we just purchased for cash and this car has become my wifes daily drive. average MPG 18-20 All 3 cars are well maintained and recieve regular service. Heres the question.

Which two cars do we keep?

This sounds like something only you can decide? :dunno: Which one means more to you?
If gas is an issue, which one uses the most? If you need money, which one will bring the most?

Sounds tough, best of luck with your decision.

I would ditch the 96 Volvo.  You're at $2,500 for 2 repairs already, with more guaranteed to come.  I would imagine the 03 is much more reliable, and the Grand Caravan is ideal for hauling people/stuff, and gets decent mileage.

I started to say to keep the Caravan and the S60, but if you're not upside down on the payments and you don't have a particular attachment to it, why not sell both Volvos and buy yourself something you really like as your daily driver.  Definitely sell the wagon - the minivan can do everything it can do better and if your wife is happy driving it, why pay the money to fix it?

Sell the 1996 Volvo 850 wagon.  You have a big vehicle with the Grand Caravan, so you do not need another one.  Take the money from the sale of the 850 and put it towards the S-60 and get out of debt quicker.   :2cents:

:iagree:
Or use the proceeds from sale of the wagon to pay down a credit card and cancel it.

The correct question is: "Which car do I get rid of?"

You are not going to get rid of the Caravan because you just bought it and its your wifes favorite, so that leaves the two Volvos. It all boils down to which of the two of them you like the least.

If you dont want any car payments and you dont need the AC, keep the 850.

If you dont want to put $2500 in the 850, keep the S60.
