Electrical Mystery dash lights-up when brake applied...
« on: March 11, 2004 - 01:05:16 PM »
Noticed this the other night on the '68

all lights work fine that I can tell.

ISSUE 1
When lights are off, blinkers work fine.

When lights are on, left blinker will blink like it should for one usage, the next usage it will just stay "lit" with no blinking.  Turn lights off, blinker works normal again. ???

ISSUE 2

I only noticed this in the dark, but with all the lights off, when I apply the brake and brake lights come on,  The dash lights come on and glow softly until I release the brake pedal. ???

I went to buy a flasher to swap it in to eliminate it as a suspect, but they dont carry anything like it at the parts stores.

Anyone see anything like this before  ??

Unfortunatly you have lost your ground most likely in the tail light area. Check your lamp sockets and for a ring terminal screwed to the body. Good luck and happy hunting.

ground in tail lights will be the problem!!!!

since there is no good ground for the brake lights- it finds another way to ground out thru the the other bulbs!

That would make sense.

just got out of the trunk, any kind of ground wire near taillights not present.  No loose or unrouted wires present, factory wiring.  I need a B body wiring diagram I guess.  Just  loked at eBody same thing, nothing obvious.

I am sorry to bring this old thread back from the dead....but I did not wnat to start a new thread....

I have been having a few challenges with the Cuda...

Issue 1: One of the brake lights is brigther than the other when lit, not when you press the brakes, just when you have the lights on.
Issue 2: My turnsignals ceased to work, the hazards do work but the turn signals don't.

I am in desperate need of fixing these things as I have inspections coming up and this will be my only means of transportation for a few weeks. Should be hella fun to drive every day... ::) ::) ::)

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Take care.

For problem #2, my first guess would be the turn signal switch. Problem #1 might be a bad ground on the dim tail light side.

OK now which side would I have to look for the grounding issue? The side that is brighter or the other?

Thanks!

Like I said, I suspect a bad ground on the dim tail light side. I'm not familiar with Cuda's, but if the sockets are like the Challenger's, then they need a good contact with the tail light housing. That's where they get the ground connection from. Just out of curiousity, pull the bright side tail light out of it's housing, and see what the dim side does.

People...

Please do no get me wrong...

But where in hell is the flasher near the ashtray?

I can only find the one close to the stearing column...and nothing else...

These problems are driving me crazy...I want the car to be working perfectly, or as close as possibly....and all these knick knacks are preventing me from doing so...

Thanks...

check by the ash tray. put your hand up under the dash and then towards yourselve. it should have a red and black wire to the connector- if you only find the connector- then you need a flasher unit.

Thanks for the reply deputy...appreciate it...

I did finally get it....no luck though...switched 2 flashers...still no dice...

The car was acting strange and the alternator was not charging...the gauge kept reading in at 10...thought that this might have been the culprit...changed to another new alternator...but nothing...

Now I still have the same problems...no sign lights, no brake lights and one park light brighter than the other...I tried changing the ground for the park lights but nothing....Guess I just might have to take it to a pro.

If any one has an idea....let me know...

Thank you very much...
