Did this a couple of years ago on my '73 (many details elude me). I do remember removing one of the studs, they are pressed into a square hole. I just beat it out with a hammer, upon reinstall the stud did not want to stay until I ran a nut all the way down & tightened to pull it back into place.  The rollers & bearings in my guides were dry & not fully functional. Chiseling, scraping & scrubbing out the old dried out grease was the hardest part. I was missing a couple of ball bearings but replacements were found at a local bicycle shop. One of my rear rollers was flat spotted so I filed on it to try to make functional then installed in the front figuring there would be less pressure there. Painted & greased now smooth as butter.

I had a couple broken off too.  If yours don't have to be factory original, do what I did; I put a regular bolt in from the top and put a couple of tack welds around the head to keep it in place.

I cleaned mine up last year and noticed some rust on the bottoms near the studs. I concluded the spray from driving in the rain must have gotten through. Upon reassenbly, I applied silicone sealant at each opening before installing the washer and nut. :2cents:

Maybe he meant bubble gum.

I figured a guy with a name like CrazyPete would have a brother named DumDum.

dum dum also called thumb gum - go to the electrical isle at lowes/home depot.  it is a gray soft clay-like brick.  Brake a piece off, roll it into a snake, put it around the stud, tighten, it smashes and seals.  Similar in concept to plumbers putty.  Thumb gum is used in houses to seal penetrations thru siding (hvac line sets, hose bibs, cables, etc.)
