wiring help needed Charging issues.
« on: June 02, 2008 - 07:08:01 PM »
So here goes....     I stripped the engine bay,put it all back.   Went with a one wire alternator. Connected the large factory wire (brown/yellow) to the new alt. New voltage regulator in factory position.MSD box is wired to the post on the starter relay.  The factory alternator wire runs into the fuse box or bulkhead connector thingy. Then another brown/yellow wire comes out in another spot and goes to...? The post on the relay? Or one of the two tabs?  Then The + battery terminal goes to the starter,The lead off the terminal goes to the post on the relay. There is a small yellow wire that connects to one of the tabs on the relay. My fans are on the other.   The problem has been no charging. It was charging. Then I found a loose connection. Then it worked again. Then another loose connection! Then it worked again. Then I loose track ...  I'm frustrated. The new alt. is a 75 amp. deal. The guage pegs when any gas is applied. At idle it will drop just a little....when it is working.   Guages are brighter. Turn signals faster brighter.  Do I need the factory voltage regulator?        If someone could just tell me where all the wires are supposed to go mayby I can get it going again.  I have a multi-meter.     :1zhelp:

I don't think You need the VR.

The one wire deal has it's own regulator.  Try running a new bigger wire(at least 10 guage) to the battery with a fuse in line.  That should do you up nice.  I'm not sure what you did with the 2 wires that used to go to the alt before though.

I bought a smaller Amplifier kit and it had a #8 and a 40A inline fuse already installed.  I added this in addition to the factory wiring on mine.

Tom :2thumbs:
Start with a fully charged battery, the alt isn't designed to charge a dead battery.

What is your voltage at idle at the battery?

Hey Tom..   The battery shows 10.5      I'll charge it up some. It might start now.  It's so weird. It was completley dead...nothin'   Then I popped the alt. wire off and it wanted to go...?    This is nuts.  What's this about running my own wire. When I did that ...no guage    :dunno:        As it sits...  Not enough juice to start it. But I got guage.  It's so freakn' random   I'm at a total loss here.   I'll toss the charger on it and try it some other time.  damit. :stomp:

Yeah my Amp guage only reads what is left of the current through it.  I added a voltmeter to keep an eye on the battery.  So I was thinking if you added a new wire it would eliminate any car issues and begin charging.  I think something seems crossed up with your factory stuff.  Or the alternator isn't grounded good?  Do you have the engine to firewall and battery grounds in?

Thanks Tom !!  That helps alot!   So if I run that one big wire from the alt. to the battery terminal will I have a factory guage?

No. I would add it too what you have now so unless You do a complete bypass of the ammeter.

You can take the 2 wires off the ammeter and connect them or bypass the bulkhead connector by drilling a hole for a continuous piece of wire(MAD upgrade do search).

For now just bypass by adding a wire and see if it charges fine.  When You see it work, You can attack a permanent fix that ill look/function well.

Tom

I had used a plug in Voltmeter in the cigar lighter temporarily to keep an eye on the charging situation. :2cents:
