Dodge discontinued the shaker in '70 when it was discovered that the Challenger shaker hoods wouldn't crumble but go through the windshield in a crash. Some non-T/As got T/A hoods later in the year.  Don't know how many, Barry probably does.

A nice little tid bit along the same topic is www.shakerhood.com sells a T/A hood air cleaner base that fits on the stock 426 hemi, so you can install a T/A hood on a hemi Challenger and really make it look stock.

Ok, the whole scenario of Shaker hoods (N96) being replaced with T/A hoods (N94) is a myth.

Here is why....

The shaker hoods were not available for a time due to safety concerns, we all know that.

BUT, they were back in production before the T/A hood was released, so any car ordered with a shaker would have had a raisin bran (J54) hood installed, not the N94 hood.

The N94 hood was available once it was introduced as an option for any Challenger with a performance engine, this continued for the 1971 model year.

For 1971 Challengers with the N94 hood, I have seen only three so far.

My cuda-challenger resto book states  that shaker cars got T/A hoods when the shakers ran out and has a pic, but I remember Barry stating this was not true

That's what I discovered after my first e body restoration. Now I mostly use it for the pictures.

The price included hood pins and the proper air cleaner tub too.

Quite a bargain by todays standards.

Now I'm wondering - If a 70 hood won't crumple properly in a crash, should it be modified so it will? How could it be done? I don't think it would be fun to be decapitated in a wreck just to keep the car original.

Really I don't think it is something you need to worry about.
