Good piston for mild 383?
« on: June 05, 2008 - 06:43:04 PM »
The 383 block is at the machine shop so I need to decide on pistons soon, boring .030 over.Going in my road runner for a nice criuser, may up the cam slightly,9-9.5-1 compression, mild bowl work, stock intake and exhaust mainfolds,3.23 gears. What pistons?Cast, hyperatetic(sp) or forged?

IMO, I'd run a forged flat top.... With the flat top you'll get good flame travel. Being forged, if later down the road you want to up the motor some, you'll have a better foundation to work with.... But since you've stated no price range, then.... The hyp's are good pistons, I like how the KB hyp's are designed with that step head (which ever they call it), but the block has to bored a certain way if using the hyp's pistons.... Cast, well... it's the basic. If all you're gonna do is drive it on the street, never plan on doing any real horse power upgrades, then this maybe your better choice.... But as I had said first, imo, forged flat top. You can get one in the comp ratio range you are looking for. As for the cam, my suggestion is Steve @ Lunati..... What heads are you going to be running?

I would run the hypers. They are cheap, and durable, easy to balance, and you can get a 0 deck with them pretty easy. (this requires milling, but almost all pistons will require milling  for 0 deck installed hieght in a 383 block) There is no difference in boring or wall finish (texture) for any piston. What is different from forged(loose) to cast(tighter) to hypers (very tight) is the final dimension of the bore. Because that defines the piston to wall clearance. I think that's what was meant. I've done a few like this, with stock 906 heads, and Comp XE268 cam. They run like tops, idle nicely at 750rpm, and pull from idle up to 6K.

That's what I was getting at..... Sometimes my point doesn't quite come over right, glad some people can clarify things I mean..... Thanks. :smokin:

I`ll be running 906 heads with just a basic bowl cleanup and gasket match.
